Underappreciated fact:
The paths and positions of the cable damages around New Years 2026 were to most of Estonia's internet backbone routes.
Had it fully succeeded/happened by accident (lol) Estonia would have been left with a crippled connectivity.

On the last day of the year, another cable damaged in the Gulf of Finland.
The Finnish Border Guard reports that a ship has been taken into custody.
The incident is not good news. The Finnish response is.
We've not seen the last of these suspicious cable cuts.

What Is War? Ask an Underwriter.
Correctly defining conflict has high stakes in the insurance industry.
What constitutes an act of war these days?
The people defining this crucial issue are...underwriters.
The trial of Serhii K will be of enormous significance for them - and indeed for everyone.

It has been published: the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy's report on undersea cables.
It was a privilege to be involved in the inquiry and see some of my suggestions picked up by the committee.

‘We’re here to stop Russia taking the Black Sea’: with the Ukrainian Navy as they battle for supremacy on the waves
Captain Oleksandr and his crew are on constant alert to shoot down Vladimir Putin’s swarming drones
My dispatch from the Black Sea and a Ukrainian patrol boat that shoots down Russian drones. I also spoke to the vice admiral who sank the Moskva warship. "When Kyiv had a university Moscow was a bog & home to croaking frogs," he said. Pix: @alessiomamo.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

The building blocks of European defense are the national capabilities.
I don't see a whole of Europe approach as likely, nor a viable alternative, but instead that like-minded countries come together forming blocks, coordinating plans, investing together when possible.

A Russian flagged cargo vessel is driving back and forth across C-Lion1 comms cable and Nord Stream disused pipelines since last night.
She is 22 miles off the coast of Gotland and close to the only east-facing port facilities. There has been anti-naval activity N and S of the position during day.

Map showing the position of the Russian vessel Yantar, in the Irish sea on 14 November 2024.
While I can't rule out that they did the AIS equivalent of "butt dialing", it seems odd that for the four minutes or so they enabled AIS (over the entire day) - they were right beside a gas pipeline.
Sin é.

Willpower, Not Manpower, is Europe’s Main Limitation for a Force in Ukraine - War on the Rocks
Following a dramatic meeting in the White House, U.S. military support for Ukraine is perilously uncertain. Sustaining Ukraine in this war, and
Jack Watling and I take a look at what the requirements might look like for a European force in Ukraine. We find that this not an insurmountable task, but will require proper resourcing and difficult political choices. @warontherocks.bsky.social warontherocks.com/2025/03/will...
