OK
Just π₯π₯π₯ from @davidjbier.bsky.social - incredible work by the principled libertarians at @cato.org
art belongs on university campus. medicine belongs on university campus. so do law, engineering, agriculture. social and life sciences and humanities belong on university campus too. so does business. they all make up the world, culture, society we live in. they're all worth studying and teaching.
Fwiw, I receive lots of DMs from junior academics (and people in industry!) who apparently appreciate my less sanguine takes about AI and don't feel comfortable talking up about it.
It's almost as if people have different opinions and preferences but not everyone wants to wade into everything.
I'm sorry man but what's the narrative here? That AI users/boosters are now being persecuted online or something? What?
Social media is *full* of free talk about AI.
Jnr faculty are *always* anxious about speaking out publicly (and snr faculty often advise them not to, for better or worse).
I tell my grad students they should be using LLMs/agentic AI.
I also tell them to stay out of boosterism/hype cycles and focus on what they can control.
How did Claude Code do on the "human connection" questions?
Conditionally accepted at the APSR (w/ @scottclifford.bsky.social & @patrickpliu.bsky.social):
Why does political information so often change beliefs but NOT attitudes? We highlight the role of belief relevance, or the extent to which beliefs bear on attitudes.
Humans putting AI out of work, you love to see it

My life is so mundane that this is an empty set
Tbth I feel this kind of behaviour should exclusively be the domain of YouTube vloggers
Tbf last night the 7 year was telling me about "cat memes" (business cat, science cat) so maybe we will be culturally relevant again soon
Dropped a few 6-7s this term but declined any skibidi toilets
I exclusively use memes my 7 year old brings home from school. Fresh. Claude could never.
I think a lot of us have been making this point over and over for a while. It's why I don't really believe any of the nonsense that some of our colleagues are spitting (and monetizing) on LinkedIn.
Tho I'm still extremely pessimistic about AI (maybe not for the reasons or in the way you imagine).
There's a "deep" (and obvious) answer here, which is that the UK has a broad cultural fascination with (or fetish for) the "exotic," and with the idea of being a Victorian-era gentleman explorer.
I'm not sure if it was caused by the Colonial experience, or caused it, or both.
There is/was a tradition at Wesleyan econ seminars to introduce speakers as trained at [PhD] and educated at [Undergrad].
Easy to be proud of where you were educated when the university prez writes like this

Iβm pretty libertarian wrt what people can do with their own bodies, minds, and money, but gambling in general should simply not be allowed .
