Huge fan of when a problem in a story could be solved with a simple mature conversation, said conversation actually gets to happen, and then the actual outcome accidentally ends up as "ah, I see, I have to get Worse!"

Yeah this is exactly it, it would end up derivative because your references will inevitably lead you down the road of "what does TV sound like" while having little to no direction in doing anything that sets it apart

Specifically, without genuine skills with prose, you'll never be able to translate what you saw on TV or in a game or whatever to words. You'll instead produce some really unreadable script writing.

Straying outside of the cultural norm is Simply Not Done and a terrible, unspeakable crime in the UK. You're expected to assimilate immediately and not cause a fuss - because being outside of The Ordinary is simply unthinkable.

idr who it was who said it (maybe Kojima?) but every creator has a fire and you can take a bit of that fire and use it to build your own. If you want to figure out how to write good prose from base principles, be my guest, but don't expect your fire to get very warm

And even if you're planning on writing something that doesn't require full on prose (TV, comics, games, etc) I'd still say you should read! You can learn a lot from different mediums!

I think there is a little nuance in the whole "you don't need to read to write" discussion — namely that books aren't the only form of writing out there — but it still just boils down to obvious shit anyway. A good TV series or video game can teach you a lot, but they can't teach you prose.

I'm going to press on and come back to it another time but fuck this is the first time in a while that I've read back over a day of writing and not liked it 😔
