"“If you demand that engaged and committed parents send their children to school with the children of disengaged and uncommitted parents, then you are obligated to explain why this standard applies to low-income black and brown parents — and only to them,” Pondiscio writes." ~ from the NYT review...

But not Cormac McCarthy's _The Road_ necessarily. Because that road is fucking terrible.

I love that. I get so distracted about my concern for the characters that I need to skim ahead in order to concentrate on second pass. :)

Do you gobble books super fast to find out what happened to the characters and then go back for the savor read?

During the pandemic, I had days when I felt I was by myself on a shore drained of the tide, dragging a stick across miles of wet sand. There were also days when I was a boy again, sliding down a snowy hill on a flattened cardboard box. And there were days when I remembered the teacher who made us memorize a poem each week, and when we asked why, she said we might one day find ourselves in a wreck at the side of the road and we would recite these poems to stay alive.
Rick Barot ♥️
A beautiful reminder of what poetry can do.

We stayed here when my Dad and I traveled Europe for two months many many moons ago. A beautiful place, and far cheaper accommodations than Amsterdam. :)

So Philip Glass just joined TikTok. He only has like 4 posts and they’re simply him in what I assume is his living room playing the piano. First comment on one I saw was “your piano is too close to the fireplace, you’ll dry it out” and if that’s not the internet in a nutshell I don’t know what is.

A flowering crocus with bright purple petals, thin green upright leaves and a yellow center blooms through the bare, mulch covered ground.
Good morning, crocus. 💜

The painting "Night in the Steppe" shows a vast plain under a bright full moon, the light being distributed over the landscape and the water in an almost magical way.
This work is made by the renowned Ukrainian artist Ivan Marchuk, who invented the unique painting style called "plyontanism" (from the Ukrainian word plyontaty, meaning "to braid"). This technique consists of hundreds of fine, intertwined lines that create depth and an almost textile-like texture.
