Reminder, the ACS Inclusivity Style Guide still does not include Gender & Sexuality nor Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality. They were removed almost a year ago. Something tells me, it isn't a pause on those two sections. Review & refinement shouldn't take a year. #ChemSky #ChemChat

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Late last night, ICE agents stormed into HCMC past hospital staff security. They refused to leave on orders of staff, security, hospital general counsel, and all 7 county commissioners, even with half the elected officials in Minneapolis personally on site. MPD refused to trespass ICE from HCMC. The word is that can only come from Chief O'Hara. Who answers directly to Mayor Frey.
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best. It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

I do understand: you want permission. There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely). You gave one to your teacher and they didn’t notice. Your boss told you to use it after they laid off half the team and it was fine. You fed one to your kids and they liked it. You want to know you can use it sometimes without me thinking less of you. You don’t need me to believe it’s useful, you just want me to be polite about it.
