And I can’t stress this strongly enough. No.

I was off most of last semester.

Received a wee round of applause from learners as I came in to class today.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Felt a bit meh today, and mostly on top of teaching. So spent some time reading the authors that have cited me of late. Quite a few PhDs and MRes, and a few interesting books.

So I’ve compiled my four (ok 5) favourite aspects of research… 1/2

I’ve reached the age. An overly energetic head bop to Hall & Oates on the school run and now I can’t look right.

I welcome massage recommendations in the Hobart area.

Blistering day of little progress in the garden.

So a quiet pint of cider with the always quarrelsome VS Naipaul.

A troubling read, but damn he can write prose like few I know.

2025 was a challenge on many fronts. A real struggle.

Only two days into 2026 an not even a rotten sinus infection can bring down the joy in receiving positive, constructive, and encouraging reviews received today to a very lengthy article in v prestigious journal posted mid year.

I was surprised by this too so came back via Taroona, which was slow and meandering but it was least moving.

I so wish I could be at #AAANZ2025 where my wonderful colleague Karen Hall will be convening a terrific panel we devised on creative approaches to sound in #envhums #envhist.

Poor health keeps me away, but I hope speakers and audiences are enriched.

My wee tantrum over, I’ve deleted my outrage at how universities are attacking the very foundations of research and critical thinking (the thing that distinguishes us from rocks).

I’m now having a cup of tea in front of a fire in a lovely pub in Huonville.

I’m still right though.

β€œIt is very likely that universities not actively using AI will risk having less competitive researchers.”

No. Research undertaken without AI will be competitive due to its assurance of integrity.

I mean, one pooped on me. Less good.

But I’m going with the good overall. Trying to be positive.

Counterpoint to the AHA Committee: it is NOT OUR JOB TO TEACH AI literacy. It is our job to teach students history, critical thinking; how to interrogate and analyse sources, primary and secondary; how to write and weave historical narratives; how to communicate history to the public and more.
