Brooke studies chemosymbiotic lucinid bivalves (our highlighted fossils today), using morphometrics, phylogenetic analyses, sclerochronology, and microbial ecology to investigate how symbiosis, shell morphology, and environmental gradients shape biodiversity.

Hans left a huge mark in the field of palaeontology. He is well remembered by peers & enthusiasts for his thorough work & jolly sense of humour.

He will be dearly missed by friends & colleagues at Historical Biology & beyond. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. (6/6)

Lastly, we have Pappochelys, which Hans called one of his favourite fossils. This diaspid reptile's discovery suggests turtles should also be considered diaspids. This critter, described by Hans in 2015, could thus be a stem turtle 🐒

Hans' lasting legacy in palaeontology is perhaps best reflected in this fossil - Hanssuesia, a pachycephalosaurid named in his honour in 2003. This was a dome-head dinosaur from the Cretaceous, & this critter even suffered a lesion. (4/6)

This fossil is the braincase of an Upper Triassic pseudosuchian from Canada, cautiously ID'ed as Postosuchus. This fossil, the focus of one of Hans' most recent papers, showed this clade's presence at low palaeolatitudes.

This fossil is Irritator challengeri, a spinosaurid from Brazil. Hans was part of the team that extracted the skull from rocks it came in. The name "Irritator" reflects irritation of palaeontologists who found the skull damaged by collectors.

For #FossilFriday, we're paying tribute to fossils from the incredible work of our deputy editor-in-chief, Dr Hans Sues, who sadly passed away last weekend.

This photo of him includes a cast of a Brontosaurus skull, a 20 m sauropod, from the Smithsonian where he worked πŸ¦•(1/6)
