AI is fundamentally a labor issue - and if after reading these testimonials from educators that @bcmerchant.bsky.social has collected you're not convinced it's time for a Luddite praxis in K-12 and higher education, then shit, I'm not sure what else to tell you.
Yeah, man, it’s an absolute mystery why so many people are going all in on AI refusal. Maybe they absolutely do understand the ways in which AI is “useful” to the people hawking AI in the words of those very people.

I was required to install it on my personal laptop old job (where I was—ahem—a university writing & reading specialist) and we were required to make sure students installed it because the school had a pro subscription. However, I turned mine off after about 40 minutes and no one ever knew.

The idea's out there today that the job of an op-ed page is to publish pieces making the case for (as well as against) every topic or proposal that's in the news, "even if the policy is bad." This may seem reasonable and it's a thing I struggled with when I was an op-ed editor, so I have thoughts. +
It's especially exhausting when I go out of my way to break assignments down into smaller parts, including some that are basically free points if they complete the assignment with any engagement at all. (And yes, I'm still bitter about having (and being paid for) one first-year Eng class of 45.)

When I pointed out a student's essay was clearly a ChatGPT hallucination (the text was about mountain climbing, not drug use; it makes sense in context), he decided the best strategy was to tell me he asked his sister to do the assignment because he was too busy, so academic honesty is going great.
And we weren't being told it was our job to teach students how to use Chegg "ethically" and efficiently, or having it directly planted into the materials we have to use. Does he think educators criticizing ChatGPT were fans of those companies?
I first "learned" I was bad at math just because my poor hand-eye coordination meant I couldn't complete those "math minute" worksheets fast enough. But that was okay, because I was creative. Had completely internalized it by the time I was past basic arithmetic.
I also love getting this "request" exactly when I am grading midterm work for a single first-year writing class of 47 students, instead of the 2 classes I was contracted for.
And look, I am not a hard-ass teacher; I run myself ragged doing individual reach outs about missing work and making accommodations and exceptions for students. There are other students who I'm sure would have been happy for an extra two months to do work without LYING about me to the registrar
