β¦I ask myself, do their mamas not also love their babies? How different are they, really, from me and my kind? So different that they do not deserve peace?
This really resonated with me. In my later years when I think or at least hope Iβve accumulated something like wisdom and I contemplate the lives of people very different from mine and those of the people I know, people whom I might be tempted to think lesser of from my privileged perspectiveβ¦
Nice try Palantir
At these schools we saw hip-high piles of useless laptops.
Enriched tech companies; accomplished little, nothing, or even less. In the β00s I worked on a pilot project to deploy Linux-based thin-client PCs in middle and elementary school classrooms and that actually produced results - at about $600/seat, our fees included.
Am I understanding thereβs an Iran-Contra connection?
Whatβs crazy about being a laggard is that Toyota came up with a recip-only (no crankshaft) APU for an EV something like 20 years ago.
Abandon the facility? Are you saying the US wonβt be able to find a use for giant hollow windowless buildings with limited entry/exit all over the country ?
BTW I set up and run independent instances of NEMS for research purposes in academia.
(which, btw, is when e'gy consumption in the US went mostly flat)) or COVID. It can't see major wars like in Ukraine or arbitrary and capricious tariff policies. In any case, with NEMS if you change one thing from reference (e.g. carbon taxes) it will show what differs in everything else.
The US Energy Information Administration's National Energy Modeling System is a general equilibrium model that lets everything shift (including a bespoke model of the US macroeconomic system developed by S&P Global and implemented in EViews) but it wouldn't have seen the '08 financial crisis...
Theyβre going to become prisons, arenβt they?
Thereβs a drummer I worked with who later went into solar sales. When I was helping work on a paper at GT I rung him up and he told me that the commercial rooftop installations not only benefit from larger systems for the $ but also preferential terms on interest rates and down payments.
A paper I wrote in grad school showed something similar: mine workers per coal kT/yr has only been decreasing. If the industry could eliminate *all* the coal miners, they would.
Now we know what all these βdata centersβ ππ are supposed to be for.
Am ex-DoD/DoE, BEE/MSPubPol, doing energy systems modeling.
Looking like a big fat "no:"
β¦but none of that is going to give you huge drops in wattage. An operational situation that lets you actually shut down servers and have them power back up using socket-addressable remote-controlled PDUs would be more like it.
Iβm used to dealing with various kinds of server compute loads and as long as weβre talking about servers versus ASIC nodes or some sort of GPU systems that donβt even have an OS (?) there are operational things you can do and there are things you can do at the OS level at least in Linuxβ¦
Letβs see some data from other than Waymo. I mean, really.
A lot of my energy/climate work has depended on data and software provided by federal agencies and DOE National Labs and there had been lapses and quality reductions even while Biden was in office.
BTW...are all of those giant new buildings *really* going to be "data centers?"
I worked in IT (federal, private sector, consulting) for 25 years and decided to go to grad school to work on energy and climate problems. The computing background and Electrical Engineering degree came in handy.
βTo shutter this facility is, frankly, a national security risk,β Kim Cobb told @bloomberg.com about NCAR, given its cutting-edge work on extreme weather and across fields including machine learning and AI.

Um, what kind of grade are we talking about here?
My LinkedIn suggesteds are full of FUD re renewable energy and βElon Musk says Xβ/βElon Musk says Y.β That and messages from recruiter bots.
I am reminded of hydroborane βzip fuelsβ that were originally developed to power supersonic bombers in the 1960s. The problems, though, were many: the fuel was highly toxic and volatile and it tended to cake up inside jet engines.
Itβs not the worst thing, certainly. But when you canβt remember the options for the command to make a partitionβs filesystem available to the operating system, that might be the worst thing.
You also tow ships where the front fell off outside the environment. π
