akaashi is mortified and concludes he needs obscure his face so as to not cause his coworkers any unnecessary distractions. so he starts wearing his glasses and grows his hair out a little longer.

akaashi glasses origin story: accidents keep happening around him at work. Spilled coffee, dropped staplers, papercuts, people are even walking into cubicle walls?? finally, someone tells him it’s because he’s literally so beautiful that they are all too busy staring at him to focus on their tasks.

challenged to each other to a 3-on-3 match before they even make it to the court.
“of course. your solution to EVERYTHING is to practice more.”
“Hey! It worked, didn’t it??”
“i’m telling papa keiji you’re trying to make me block for you again.”
“am NOT!”
they make their way back to the main gym, shouldering each other as they go, and as typical bokutos do, they have +
“AND, more importantly,” corrects koutarou. “/you./“
he jabs a finger into his son’s chest. “here. you might not be stronger than ALL your doubts, but it gets better. it’s like a skill you have to keep practicing.”
his son rolls his eyes, but he’s smiling.
the shoulder and stands, offering a hand up.
“that’s right. don’t you ever forget it. and hey, trust me, that little voice never really goes away. just promise me you’ll remember who’s in your corner the next time it speaks up.”
his son gives a small smile and takes his hand. “you,” he admits.
to the final point. The game before that, Kuroo and Tsukki had been in town, and gave him a full post-game breakdown of his defensive positioning. and coach konoha tries not to have favorites, but, well… he was never the best at hiding what he was thinking.
koutarou chuckles, claps his son on +
“i guess i would say that no matter how i play, my family is proud of me, and that’s what matters.”
koutarou smiles. maybe he’s done something right, after all.
“…maybe a little TOO proud, even.”
Koutarou’s sisters had come today and had cheered and yelled from the opening whistle +

the way their son scrunches his nose in thought reminds him so much of keiji, he almost sticks his finger between his eyes to smooth it out.
koutarou hums. his own mind needles at him that he’s pushed the kid too hard, or hasn’t prepared him enough. both, really. he failed any way you look at it.
ah. there’s that voice. it’s been a while.
“And what do you say back?”
His son frowns. “huh?”
of koutarou’s brain found a way to sneak through anyway.
“what’s it telling you today?”
his son scrunches his nose and shakes his curls back into place. “same thing it always does. everyone expects me to be a great player like my dads, and every time i step onto the court, i let them all down.” +
“well, not ALL of me. just that little voice, right…. there.”
he taps the side of his son’s head gently, pushing aside jet-black curls. he always joked that their son got keiji’s head on koutarou’s shoulders, and that he was lucky it wasn’t the other way around. but it seemed that little part+
it’s like looking into a mirror pointed 20 years in the past.
“yeah, everybody loved me,” he says gently. “except for me.”
his son’s eyes shoot up, and koutarou is there to meet him.
“you…?” he whispers, like he can’t make himself believe it.
“me,” koutarou confirms, rounding his own shoulders.+
