At the end of 2024 I did a chronological round up of all the #plantscience in @science.org that year.
So how did 2025 pan out? This year, Iβm grouping papers thematically instead of chronologically so read on to find out what exciting plant science came out over the last 12 months. (1/22)

Plants monitor the integrity of their barrier by sensing gas diffusion - Nature
A study using Arabidopsis shows that plants can monitor the integrity of their outer barriers by sensing gas diffusion, enabling them to initiate wound repair to prevent water loss and pathogen entry.
How plants sense injury in their barrier tissue, periderm? Painstakingly detailed and amazing work by post doc Hiroyuki Iida shows that wounding is sensed by the diffusion of two gases: ethylene and oxygen. @treebiocoe.bsky.social⬠@erc.europa.eu⬠1/x 𧡠www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Extensive N4 cytosine methylation is essential for Marchantia sperm function
Global N4 cytosine methylation in Marchantia polymorpha sperm regulates gene expression
and promotes sperm fertility.
I'm thrilled to share that our study is now published in Cell:

The Science cover picture of the 1988 issue shows the triple response mutant phenotype in a group of Arabidopsis thaliana seedling, with one tall seedling standing out β it carries the mutation in the ETR1 gene, the ethylene receptor. Next to the cover is the title page of the paper βInsensitivity to Ethylene Conferred by a Dominant Mutation in Arabidopsis thalianaβ, by ANTHONY B. BLEECKER, MARK A. ESTELLE, CHRIS SOMERVILLE and HANS KENDE.
#PlantScienceClassics #18: Ethylene triple response mutants. 35 years ago Anthony Bleecker et al. exploited the triple response phenotype to identify the #ethylene receptor ETR1 @science.org. The ethylene story is another example for #PlantBlindness at the Nobel Prize.
