Sharing our paper on Designing gender-inclusive data systems in small-scale fisheries. Gaps are structural & sexist, hiding women’s contributions, impeding actions that would strengthen livelihoods, development, food security & environmental sustainability.

Not such a bright idea: cooling the Earth by reflecting sunlight back to space is a dangerous distraction A UN meeting this week considered a motion on a suite of technologies known as ‘solar radiation modification’, but no consensus could be reached on the controversial topic.

🌏Promoting socially responsible governance of new marine climate intervention⏩ This paper shows that decisions about whether to intervene in marine systems often focus on scientific, economic, and ecological feasibility without fully anticipating risks to societies

Climate interventions to save our oceans need stronger governance, experts warn Climate interventions are accelerating in our oceans—but without responsible governance, they could do more harm than good, according to new research.

“Without robust governance, we risk repeating past mistakes—implementing ‘solutions’ that are ineffective, inequitable, or even harmful”.

Global heating is changing marine systems. 🌊 🌡️
In response, novel interventions are gaining traction fast.
They aim to sustain ocean systems and ocean-dependent societies - but come with risks. 💥

🌊 Governing novel climate interventions in rapidly changing oceans

Our climate interventions are rapidly evolving, from seaweed farms to engineered coral. However, governance is lagging, and without proper oversight, we risk trading one crisis for another...

The effects of climate change on #marine #ecosystems are increasingly negative prompting many new interventions to sustain the ocean. But, as Morrison et al. point out, #governance systems to prevent unintended consequences are “not yet in place” @profterryhughes.bsky.social‬ doi.org/10.1126/scie...

New paper: Climate interventions in oceans are popular (e.g. marine restoration, bioengineering & mCDR) but bring social risks. We find foresight and mgmt of such risks are constrained by methods, public engagement & expertise. Governance reforms urgently needed
