On Feb. 14, 1920, the national League of Women Voters was formally organized at NAWSA’s convention in Chicago, six months before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote was ratified.

At its 1919 convention, NAWSA resolved to form a league of women voters. That fall, Catt and other women’s suffrage leaders went on a “Wake Up America” tour to advocate for ratification of the 19th Amendment and explain the purpose of the newly-formed league.
