This has led to an interesting conversation in City Hall - what department does this fall under? Community Services? Planing? Legislative Services?
I coined this term to call out one of the stranger parts of this job: you are always surrounded by subject matter experts, and are expected to speak intelligently about the very subject of their expertise! It is humbling!
Trying to avoid βMayorsplainingβ on International Womenβs Day, so hereβs some better sources that have informed my thinking on how we can make #NewWest a more equitable and just City www.patrickjohnstone.ca/2026/03/iwd-...
I think the speed of sound adjustment makes it more interestingβ¦ concentric rings of time dilationβ¦
Just Pogi doing Pogi things again. 80km all by himself. Again. velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-ra...
Great 𧡠that #NewWest folks can share to counter some of the anxiety about new transitional housing that is circulating over on that other platform.
2/2 β¦I distilled it simplistically to: Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are individual goals, you can have them while denying others the same. This is not true of Peace, Order, and Good Governance. 2/2
During my time living in the Mid West in the early part of the century, I learned that our abundant cultural similarities are superficial compared to some fundamental values differences⦠1/2
Just #NewWest elector group #NWP misinforming the public about the nature of a BC housing info session, suggesting it's a townhall organized by West End activists NIMBYing the shelter coming to the south end of 20th Street. Create chaos, campaign on the chaos, repeat. Who's organizing whom?
A letter from the Mayor expressing support for the Building Safer Communities Fund funding, and the critical need for youth Mental Health supports in #NrewWest
Alas, the funding for the Youth Hub & associated supports is at threat as the federal Building Safer Community Fund support ends. I've sent the attached note to MP Jake Sawatzky & the Minister of Public Safety asking for continued support. Please join me in advocating for these critical programs!
A panel of New West youth talk about their experience of mental health and other challenges to an audience.
At a time when youth are facing unprecedented mental health challenges, when we can see the repercussions in allowing youth to fall through cracks in society, the Youth Hub is a demonstration of where gov't can invest to keep youth connected to community & on a path of happiness...
Patrick and Youth Hub staff stand in front of a bright wall mural
Yesterday I attended the Capacity CafΓ© at the #NewWest Youth Hub. This was a chance to hear from youth in the City β who were pretty frank with us about their lived experience β and hear what community support looks like from their experience...π§΅
Hyack Anvil Time. Every day when the sun is directly over Queens Park, we light off an anvil, and everyone sets their watch to noon when they hear the retort.
TFW you are presented an award, and get a Mark V home!
And congrats on your awards tonight! And was that a @tomflood.bsky.social t-shirt you were rocking!?
It is humbling to be mentioned anywhere near Arno. He was such a strong advocate, a relentless champion for safer roads and active transportation, and a great human. I know I havenβt done enough to earn the association, but will take this as energy to keep #NewWest moving forward!
Have you heard there is PST on Yarn now?
So no time for Rattle and Hum? π
You missed it by one. Last Dance has its place, an epic concert, but the cinematic presentation and storytelling of Stop Making Sense hands down #1.

I dunno... I have faith Newey can make a milk crate faster than the pack, if Honda shows up with a motor that can make the distance. I'm looking forward to is no-one knowing what the hell is happening for the first few races; it may take mid-season for Ferrari to figure out creative ways to lose.
Happy Casimir Pulaski Day to all who celebrate!

A pie chart showing 26% say "just right", 26% say "too much", 29% say "not enough" and 19% are "not sure".
Public Engagement. We are either right on track here or completely missed the mark, and I have no way of telling which. π
Thank you Ramsay for this!
β¦And a shout out to @visionzerovancouver.ca for the counsel in developing this resolution for UBCM, and for keeping road safety on the agenda across the lower mainland!
(argh!!) move *past* anecdotes...
Patrick, Nina Krieger the Minister of Public Safety and MLA Jennifer Whiteside stand for one of those political Photos.
And, in meeting with the Minister last week, we talked through these challenges, and I also reiterated #NewWest support for speed and intersection cameras, and offered McBride Avenue as a location where automated enforcement could save lives in the short term!
To do this well, to do it effectively, we need to move part anecdotes (I have lots of those!) and use actual data to guide our priorities. In BC , it is hard to share data about road safety between the City, ICBC, MOTT, Health, etc., and I'm asking the Minister of Public Safety to change that...
In #NewWest we are continuing to make road safety improvements, investing more than ever in safer intersections and mobility lanes, but our Vision Zero work starts with a systems approach - understanding where the current design of our roads fails to assure safety...
