This Deathcap drama is getting stupider by the day. Foraging for mushrooms is safe if you the learn the basics of identification and avoid picking Amanitas. Any headlines to the contrary are intentionally fear mongering to drive up views and engagement.

They are edible and pretty decent, they are commercially cultivated in China as food

Technically it’s mating types which are different from true “sexes” but yes it’s the fungal equivalent

Fantastically purple gills on this Western Purple Deceiver - Laccaria amethysteo-occidentalis, the caps are decently tasty but the stems tend to be very fibrous. Seen here in Napa, CA

If you want to see fungi infecting insects in the SF Bay, I think this week is going to be about as good as it gets. I’ve seen lots of infected insects the past few days including these Gibellula that attack spiders

A perfect cluster of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus) found on an oak here in Napa, roasted them up alongside some quail and Chesnut boudin blanc sausages from the Fatted Calf

They can be hard to spot but I love foraging for black trumpets (Craterellus calicornucopiodes), delicious edible mushrooms that have a deep umami flavor reminiscent of truffles. Found out on the Sonoma coast #fungifriends
