This Deathcap drama is getting stupider by the day. Foraging for mushrooms is safe if you the learn the basics of identification and avoid picking Amanitas. Any headlines to the contrary are intentionally fear mongering to drive up views and engagement.

Technically it’s mating types which are different from true β€œsexes” but yes it’s the fungal equivalent

Very disappointed by the reporting and official response to Deathcaps in California. Preaching abstinence instead of educating the public is damaging the reputation of mushrooms as a whole and will only lead to confusion, fear, and ignorance. #deathcap #amanitaphalloides

Found one perfect golden chanterelle (Cantharellus californicus) on my street today. This is the officially state mushroom of California, I helped get this signed into law my testifying before the California state senate.

Fantastically purple gills on this Western Purple Deceiver - Laccaria amethysteo-occidentalis, the caps are decently tasty but the stems tend to be very fibrous. Seen here in Napa, CA

If you want to see fungi infecting insects in the SF Bay, I think this week is going to be about as good as it gets. I’ve seen lots of infected insects the past few days including these Gibellula that attack spiders

They can be hard to spot but I love foraging for black trumpets (Craterellus calicornucopiodes), delicious edible mushrooms that have a deep umami flavor reminiscent of truffles. Found out on the Sonoma coast #fungifriends

β€˜If you're not educated enough, there’s real danger’ As the Department of Health advises against foraging, professional mushroom-hunters share tips on picking safely.

There’s been a bunch of unbelievably bad reporting around Deathcap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides). Here’s a reporter who actually interview foragers (myself included) and does a better job of summarizing the risks without leaning into sensationalism.

My viral video on the science of Deathcaps (Amanita phalloides). Unfortunately they are having quite a season here in California, however you can still safely forage for mushrooms if you know how to avoid these. For beginners, just stay away from Amanitas in general. #deathcap #toxicmushroom
