there are now 9 coffee shops/cafes within walking distance of our house, *not* counting the starbucks.

extremely cute new breakfast joint just opened at the top of our street, and they have an ancient CRT/VHS player set into the wall in the kitchen playing an extremely grainy copy of The Lion King.

The proprietor has a man bun. the place oozes hipster chill. I kind of love it.

every time we have a windstorm like this I think, wow, what a beautiful day to not have a 40ft dead oak tree in the yard behind our house.

There are still some scraggly pines back there that look sadder every year, but the oak tree was going to kill someone.

I do find it interesting to compare it to sea of stars in that respect, though, because both games are making deliberate choices about their audience by choosing the rating that they did. SoS *could* lean much harder into the horror aspects, but refuses to, which I find interesting.

yeah! it's interesting to see a retro-style game approach a mature rating, because outside of the occasional f-bomb it does *technically* stay within the Teen/PG-13 realm. but what would graphic violence or sex on-screen even look like with a 16-bit jrpg aesthetic? I don't think it's possible.

another friend who played the game did voice that complaint; you get horrors beyond mankind's comprehension, but the character portraits are all like 😊 the whole time. there's definitely bit of dissonance between tone and depiction.

they usually quiet down before it gets too obnoxious, thankfully- they weren't playing music loudly, just yelling a bit. for the most part the guests there are pretty well behaved.

legit I think that's the hardest fight in the game considering the level you're at when you reach it. I always have to come back to that one later.

I think the developer mentions CT as part of the vibe, but he's said he's most heavily influenced by FFT/FFXII. there are some very direct parallels and references. (imo its real spiritual ancestor of the snes era is breath of fire 2, but there's a lot of ff6 in there too.)
