TLDR; when someone close to you is coming out or sharing something really personal about their identities, reassure their safety around you and acknowledge how you can be of support to said person. πβ¨
Mind you, my dad was from the provinces of the Philippines, grew up and raised us in a conservative Catholic family. Additionally, I came out to him in the late 2000s.
However, no matter what, he was always going to protect us.
My dad is one of the reasons why I too want to be a father.
Without going into too much detail, when I came out my dad made me feel loved but also told me that he is going to make the effort to protect me no matter what because I was always going to be his child.
He also recognized that he needed to change his perception on queer folks.
It was clear that the two way conversation showed how important safety (for Shane) and self-recognition (from his mom) is when having these types of discussions.
This reminds me of how I came out to my dad when I was 18. At the time folks, including my mom knew but I could never say it to my dad.
I've been going back-and-forth about how important the dialogue between Shane and his mom is on episode 6 of Heated Rivalry, and the dynamic of coming out of the closet shouldn't be a one way conversation, but two.
