This has been a very dumb but very fun endeavor.
It has made me hate social media a lot but it has also given me a whole bunch of new birds that I want to see.
I've been doing this thing on Instagram where I pick a random bird every week and talk about it.
This week the wheel landed on one of the rarest birds on the planet.
(I also built a little viz tool to understand just how rare it is)

Omg, its little clown gloves!!!
These courses start in two weeks.
They're about cultivating a practice of noticing, understanding how observation becomes data, and giving yourself the permission to be creative with the information you make.
They're also about community and environmental care.

Photo with a choir of men dressed either in black or white. The Men in Black, about 50 of them, are standing with their backs toward the camera. There are six men dressed in white facing forward randomly spaced amongst the crowd.
This image kills me.
It's a San Francisco gay mens choir. The men in black represent members who died in the 1980s AIDS epidemic. The men in white are the ones who survived.

What I'm learning here is that I should sell hats
I've made more selling hats than my book advance.
I took this in the fall & it was *so good.*
There was so much to it that I'm still processing a lot of the ideas & thoughts about data & such.

The Bermuda Petrel is one of the rarest birds in the world. It was thought to be extinct for three centuries, until 36 nesting pairs were found in 1951.
Now, 75 years later, we can watch one hatching live on the internet!
(The chick started pipping yesterday!) πͺΆ

Penguins molt - who knew - and Eric's penguins molt almost catastrophically. Like, some of them die. lastwordonnothing.com/2026/03/09/r...
I love teaching this class, and I love learning from all the fascinating people who take it.
If you've been thinking it seems interesting but maybe it's not for you... It is probably for you.

Postal services around the world that use birds as logos. One of my favorite poster graphics I've made! π¦βοΈ
These spring sessions will likely be the last chance to take this class.
So if it's something that you have been thinking about for a while coming now's the time.
I remember thinking how ridiculously short TED talk seemed when they started.
Now that I am unsuccessfully navigating the new social media where 60 seconds is way too long, those seem like golden days.
putting ten babies into the grinder was bad enough, but when they wanted to take it to eleven I was like, enough is enough
So they cut out some gay stuff from ELIO so that parents wouldnβt feel discomfort having to explain it to their kids, stuff like βgay people existβ
If I had it all to do over again I would π― work for an obviously evil company for like three years and then resign and write a sanctimonious memoir
Oh yes let's laud another one who leaves with a golden paycheck long after it was clear what kind of work was being done

We donβt talk enough about how morally depraved the tech industry turned out to be. Every single ounce of their self-regarding statements of values was an outright lie.

Someone very proudly, but also sleepily, wearing the patchwork data jacket they just finished sewing
I still need to build the companion website, but I finished the data jacket!!
The circle on the cuff is an NFC tag that will direct folks to a website that helps explain the visualizations.

A screenshot from the Migration Dashboard on BirdCast showing the number of birds in flight for the county as a curvy line. There are a couple of dips when rain came through and grounded birds.
Weβve had a couple brief showers move through tonight, followed by quickly clearing skies and itβs neat to see the birds respond to that via the BirdCast numbers.
