Conversations with young people this week have reminded me of the importance of positive teacher/pupil relationships as a necessary prerequisite for authentic student participation/voice activities in school. Young people need adults they feel safe sharing their frustrations/hopes/ideas with.

Finally submitted on the treat bill. Te Tiriti provides a foundation for my cultural identity. I am tangata tiriti which means my identity is defined by my relationship with Māori. Our relationship with Māori is what makes us pākeha distinct from our European cousins/ancestors. Let’s celebrate that!

My partner: “ I know that conversation wasn’t for me, but you naming old cricketers with your brother and your dad for about an hour was the most bored I’ve been in my life”

Survey fatigue is real but surveys are still so heavily relied on as a way of seeking young people’s views.

While it’s not revolutionary we are trialing a deep listening approach that seeks to take stock of the perspectives young people are sharing with us everyday. #youthparticipation

So cool are they any publications from this work yet?

When upholding the right of young people to have a say in decisions that affect them one decision is: what decisions are being made or prioritised. Often the conversation is determined by adults and I’m interested in ways we can allow young people to determine the conversation! #youthparticipation

Totally! I think there is something interesting there around choice - young people choosing to be at youth organisations vs having to be at school. lots to learn from the youth work sector!

Such a valuable learning! So interested in the intersection of YPAR and positive youth development theory which not only acknowledges the need for relational approaches within participation work but celebrates it as strength of participatory methodologies

So important and when working with young people im really interested in creative ways that we can share this information that makes it accessible and understandable for different ages too.

It seems ridiculous but also such an obvious opportunity for schools to open up conversations for addressing issues that arise in toilets with students rather than taking such a punitive approach

I’m interested if people have experience working with schools and students to find solutions

Some schools in the uk are locking toilets during lessons and students are letting us know the impact:

-period anxiety for young women
-embarrassment for students with IBS
-restricting water intake
-queuing all lunch time for the toilet

Hi Louca thanks so much for this! Would I be able to be added to this please!

Youth participation should be about reciprocity! While organisational improvement or evaluation may motivate senior leaders to listen to the views of young people, emphasis should be on what the organisation can give back to young people rather than what we can extract from them #youthparticipation

I’m interested in the roles young people and adults play within participation projects and am currently working on a paper that speaks to this.

Participation opens up a dialogue where young people’s views are considered within a decision making process and although power dynamics are acknowledged, adults views and understanding can also be taken into account. #youthparticipation

I often see participation misconstrued on both sides as “doing whatever the kids want.” Advocates reduce themselves within participation projects for fear of diluting youth voice and skeptics don’t bother for fear of opening up a can of worms. #youthparticipation

Some colleagues and I as a youth worker wrote a paper that spoke to this a little bit. It posed questions to think with for academic ethics panels that considered an ethics of care and relational approaches to research!

Exactly! It’s an important conversation to have and of course it would be an interesting study to involve young people in that conversation!

Ahh yes makes sense. it will definitely be helpful as a tool to encourage those who hadn’t bothered with either! I like the idea of searching for pre existing material on both sides! Thanks again for sharing

Thanks for this resource! I’ve been thinking a lot about consultation fatigue and a sentiment of “stop asking us the same questions” in some of my work. Really interested in some of the questions around utilising previous research/voices in decision making processes.

Such an important conversation and great to consider other ways of recognising/valuing co researchers when we think about the research happening in community settings with tight budgets.

How can we as practitioners raise our capacity to listen in the everyday and what are ethical considerations this raises with regard to informed consent? #youthparticipation

I’m interested in what we allow to count when it comes to gathering children and young people’s perspectives. Your right to have your voice heard will be upheld if you share it through the latest, purpose built, survey or focus group.

Hi everyone, I have recently moved to the UK from NZ and have the privilege of working towards embedding a culture of child and youth participation within a mental health service in the NHS. Looking forward to posting some reflections and questions here on Bluesky!
