I just ate the sole survivor of my attempt to grow a garden this summer: a tiny, watery, seedy cantaloupe. All the greens I tried to grow got eaten by ants or plowed under by the neighbor cat using it as a litter box.
I didn’t plant cantaloupe, so this must’ve been a volunteer from the compost.

of historical parallels between of the 14th Century and the late 20th Century, when this was written…but the parallels to the early 21st Century seem even stronger.
