Raccoons solve puzzles for the fun of it, new study finds They raid compost bins, outsmart latches and sometimes look gleeful doing it. A new study in Animal Behaviour suggests raccoons may not just be opportunistic—they may be genuinely curious.

Raccoons persist in solving puzzles even after receiving a food reward, indicating intrinsic curiosity and flexible problem-solving that may help them adapt to urban environments. doi.org/hbrwg3

'Peculiar' crocodile ancestor started life on four legs before learning to walk on two A "peculiar" ancient relative of the crocodile which experts believe began life on four legs before, in adulthood, it learned how to walk on just two has been revealed in a new study.

Fossil evidence suggests Sonselasuchus cedrus, an ancient crocodile relative, transitioned from walking on four legs as a juvenile to bipedal locomotion in adulthood during the Late Triassic. doi.org/hbrtbx

Don't let the weather get you down. The beauty about photography is that there are always opportunities, you only need to see them! Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.

A little break from the atrocities of the world. The other night I went out to the desert on a whim to shoot the full moon rising by my favorite saguaro.

The blooms rise with a warm, steady glow.
Color gathers softly at their edges, bright but unhurried.
The leaves anchor the moment, holding everything in calm balance.
The day opens around them, learning its first light.

The petals rise in a quiet shimmer of color.
A warm pulse gathers at the center, steady and bright.
Light drifts along each curve as if listening.
The bloom rests in a calm that feels almost spoken.

The red blooms rise softly in the light.
Their color settles against the thorns.
Shadows fall quiet around them.
The moment holds its calm.
Nature’s embrace lingers in the stillness.

A molecular 'switch' could make pancreatic cancer more treatable Scientists at Duke-NUS Medical School have identified a molecular "switch" that determines whether pancreatic cancer cells resist chemotherapy or respond to it—a finding that could help convert some of the most treatment-resistant tumors into forms that are more manageable with existing drugs.

A molecular mechanism controlling pancreatic cancer cell states has been identified, suggesting that targeting this pathway could enhance chemotherapy effectiveness in resistant tumors. doi.org/hbq64h

Peachy skies above a golden iceberg with three peaks, which looks a little like a mini mountain range. There are little bubbles visible inside, catching the light.

A little Icelandic mountain range (well, actually just a close-up abstract of an iceberg at sunset). My entry for this week's #ShareMondays2026

Three turquoise icebergs in a dark blue glacial lagoon. The two large ones were clearly one that has split - along the split edge is snow.

Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon continues to blow my mind.

You can use drones at certain times of day/season, so was able to photograph these ridiculously turquoise icebergs from above.

A series of volcanic black stacks just off shore from a large cliff, partially covered in snow. In the distance are snowy mountains and a small town with a church. The water is very blue.

Also took the drone over the Reynisdrangar stacks (asked permission from landowner who said it was okay!) - what a view! Note the cute red-roofed church at Vík in the distance.

Feral honeybees (honeybees are not native to North America, but feral colonies are established in many places) in the desert this morning. I was gonna go ask them why they were so swarmy, but decided against it 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

This sandstone was beautiful enough on its own but I wanted to wait for the tide to come in to tell more of a story of how it was formed. After about 150 exposures, I landed on this one.

A cosmic explosion with the force of a billion suns went unseen—until we caught its echo Some of the universe's most extreme explosions leave behind almost no trace. The original explosion is unseen, but our observations can capture the long-lived echo it leaves behind as the shock front plows into its surrounding environment.

Astronomers have detected a rare radio afterglow from a powerful cosmic explosion, likely an orphan gamma-ray burst or a star disrupted by an intermediate-mass black hole, billions of light-years away. doi.org/hbqrs2

Wet

Wet

Sydney was very wet last night, so I didn’t wander far from home this morning. Surry Hills’ Wimbo Park has been many things since colonisation, including the city’s stoneyard from mid WWI to the early 1980s. Now it hosts kids, walkers, dogs…. and the light rail.

Finally rebooked on a flight to #Iceland very early tomorrow morning so shouldn't lose much time. What an unwelcome drama! Fingers crossed tomorrow is a little more successful.

Talking of drama, here's a photo from that ridiculous view again, from March 2019.
