It's that time of year... Minnesota next week anyone?
The Sacramento weather service office just sent an email detailing product changes amid "critically reduced staffing"
Highlights:
Phone lines no longer answered
Reduced staffing from 6pm to 6am
Forecast discussions issued only 1x/day
Limited social media posting
Advisories mainly issued by day shift
Blizzard conditions are occurring in and especially South of Lakes Country in West Central MN. As more snow accumulates, I expect conditions to significantly deteriorate.
My only hope is that the private sector expands and that more jobs open up to accommodate the influx of folks who won't be working for the federal govt. or were laid off. Even then, ideally the NWS becomes viable again... seems unlikely though :(
Guess I need to start digging into the private sector to look for opportunities. Pathways seems to be a no go. I received notice that my local NWS office is no longer taking volunteers after submitting my application. I've got a bit more than a year left of school and am terrified of the job market.
Twitter is such an unhealthy space to be a part of. I deleted the app for a while after the election but redownloaded it when folks kept sending me links to posts that I couldn't access. It's awful.
I just got fired from NWS . This email is all I know. Read if you want.
Watching the systematic dismantling of federal programs and services in real time has been incredibly disturbing.
To my friends in the federal work force who are at risk, words cannot express how much I'm grieving for you. You matter, and your impact is meaningful to me and so many other people โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ
Impressive cold in Pennsylvania this morning, with my hometown of York, PA recording a bitter -12โฐF at the York/Thomasville regional airport. Anecdotally, I can't recall a single time from my childhood where we got that cold. #PAwx
Early morning ice fishing at Devils Lake, ND at -20F.

Incredible whiteout conditions near Hallock, MN. Photo was taken around 10:15am, but conditions are persisting if not deteriorating. Am now safely in Hallock. Winds are easily gusting over 60MPH. This FROPA is MEAN. #MNwx #NDwx
Great presentation on Saturday with the other panelists!
Wow, incredibly framed with the road and mountain. Love this one Vince!

Rough road conditions in the Devils Lake Basin tonight. Some roads are completely covered in drifts. Heavier band of snow has now moved into the RRV. Expect snowfall rates to increase and road conditions to deteriorate.
Not really seeing support for widespread blizzard conditions, would like to see stronger CAA. A lot of things are mistimed for this to work out favorably. Blowing snow is certainly possible near or below blizzard criteria. Isolated sites with west RRV terrain may also see isolated blizz conditions.
To blizzard or not to blizzard, that is the question with the system that moves through tonight and tomorrow. Initally heavy snowfall rates with a thick DGZ in place by tomorrow afternoon is always something to watch. CAA is modest though, with PGF being the saving grace wind wise.
Yes
Just a little chilly... #NDwx
Afaik first SSW issued by FGF since 2022?
January-November 2024 temperature ranking compared to all January-November periods since 1895. A whole lot of red on this map. The Jan-Nov period this year is tied with the Jan-Nov 2012 period for the warmest on record. It's as if something has changed. ๐ค
Optics season is here in North Dakota! Thick low level DGZ with pretty light wind in the first kilometer or so. Seeing lots of fine glittery snowflakes falling! Credit to @wxkylegillett.bsky.social for pulling the sounding.

Noooo, we like cold
First sub-zero temperatures of the season for some portions of the state this morning as recorded by @ndawnwx.bsky.social! With colder air to come, I expect nearly every station to be sub-zero by this weekend. #NDwx
