Septima Poinsette Clark (1898–1987) was an American educator and civil rights leader whose innovative literacy and citizenship programs empowered thousands of African Americans to vote and participate in democracy. Often called “the Mother of the Movement,” she linked grassroots education with political action in the struggle for racial justice. In 1956, Clark joined the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee where she co-developed Citizenship Schools—grassroots literacy programs that taught adults to read, write, and understand their rights. The model spread across the South and became a foundation for voter registration drives, educating tens of thousands of African Americans. After retiring in 1970, Clark won reinstatement of her teaching pension and served on the Charleston County School Board. Monuments, schools, and a parkway now honor her in South Carolina. The Highlander Research and Education Center continues her legacy through the Septima Clark Learning Center.
