Three women and one girl are featured in pictures that spell out IAA. There is an Interactive Arts Alberta logo followed by "Wishing everyone a happy International Womenβs Day from Interactive Arts Alberta. Curious how we celebrate this day? First we start by celebrating it today on a day with a full 24 hours." it then instructs you to scroll for more.
Text slide "Interactive Arts Alberta is a non-profit with gender parity amongst our board and majority women and gender diverse volunteers. This is no coincidence. While women gamers make up 51% of the market, the games industry only has 25% of roles occupied by women and gender diverse individuals."
Another text slide with "Our approach? reject. the. status. quo. Representation in leadership and in the industry is important"
Text slide with "Interested in participating in systemic interruption? Connect with IAA and stay tuned for announcements in regards to our speaker line up for GDX 2026 and volunteer opportunities. We will never wait for the βright timeβ to have these conversations. There needs to be change in this industry and we will continue to advocate for marginalized genders and diverse individuals"
25%.
Thatβs the percentage of women and gender-diverse individuals in the global games industry. Just in the industry, not even in leadership.
That number isnβt just disappointing. Itβs unacceptable.
Congratulations!! π
As GDC starts this week, I published a story summing up the overwhelming fear stopping many international developers from coming to San Francisco this year. arstechnica.com/gaming/2026/...

Man Iβd WAY to prefer to live in the bakelist world. Programmers have to make delicious baked goods or be punished for all eternity.
Revisiting this, I don't know if anyone's observed this before but it sure does seem like people who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it.
Your best uncleβs haunted house post yet I think
A top-tier GSSB episode, great to see modern games scholars reflect on the βstartβ of game studies as a field.
Nice article! Have you read any of the AI-based game design literature from technical games studies?

Funnily enough, just ran a lab meeting last week on AI-based game design. I think more broadly than LLMs not being fun, we still donβt (and may never) have good ways to measure fun beyond βI know it when I see itβ.
Hard to optimize for what you canβt measure, and all AI is optimization.
Congratulations Mark! Well deserved!
A month ago I started a writing project I decided not to share unless I was consistent.
It's been a month now, so I guess I'm going to keep doing this. It's keeping me sane.

Itβs one of the best game design texts out there I think, highly recommended.
@nictringali.bsky.social re: latest Paper Labyrinths and specifically your desire for a book about physical touch and games, itβs not quite right but have you read Swinkβs Game Feel?
