Early 20th century Halloween postcards loved a verse. This one references the history behind the tradition of fancy dress at this time. This comes from guising, where people would try and avoid the ghosts and spirits of All Hallows through disguise. That fed into what we now do on October 31.
It is a starry night but the moon might be in eclipse. On the right is a cottage from which a witch, wearing the traditional tall hat, is flying away on a broomstick. She is also holding a whip which perhaps she's using as a crop to gee on the broomstick like a horse. A woman in 17th century costume is lying at rest on the left. Two cats are on their hind legs bearing a candle and another cat is flying in holding a broomstick, perhaps for the benefit of the reclining woman.
17th century (I think) woodcut of a witch. I don't know whether it was supposed to be scary at the time it was printed but it's adorable now.
