Republicans are using kids as a smokescreen for what Big Tech lobbyists want: a national surveillance program to harvest our data with zero protections for people and their privacy.

We must fight this dangerous expansion of surveillance technology.

Today 73 ago Stalin , monster guilty in genocide of millions of Ukrainians , finally died . Died after being left to lie, powerless and alone, on the floor, for hours (or even days)

Let this be a reminder that even the most seemingly all powerful evil eventually

I'm having a hard time thinking of a book I read recently that blew my mind. A bunch have been disappointing (either just ok or really disappointing). Re-reads don't count I assume. Not sure if it counts b/c I haven't finished it but Black AF History (Harriot) is pretty great so far.

Somalia is a failed state. So is Russia, use that example instead if you like, because the borders between Norway and Finland and Russia exist for good reasons. If you think what I said sounded like JD Vance you're not just naive you're delusional.

I read a bunch of Garner when I was a kid (The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, The Moon of Gomrath, Elidor, maybe The Owl Service) and remember really liking them. Can't remember if I read Red Shift, and haven't read any of them in a long time. Sounds like you recommend it?

FTR, Witkoff is a real estate hustler and Trump's golf buddy. Kushner is an unelected, unconfirmed, unconvicted criminal who is responsible for the deaths of Khashoggi and hundreds of thousands of Americans during Covid. Neither is remotely qualified for any political job in a democracy.

It's a dangerous idea that would cause huge problems and expose countries that tried it to exploitation and abuse. Russia is already trying to dump violent criminals on neighboring countries (until Putin started using them as cannon fodder). People like him see open borders as weakness to exploit.

23.02.2026 23:30 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Open borders sound nice. Language lessons and housing and job assistance is the humane way to handle immigrants. And people from failed countries like Somalia need help and a chance to build safe productive lives. But unrestricted immigration is not the solution nor a practical or realistic option.

23.02.2026 23:20 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Is it fair? No, but it's just not sustainable. A country can't solve the problems of all other countries in the world. Very few people just let anyone come into their living room and kitchen and do what they want. Eliminating borders wouldn't bring paradise to all, it would turn world into Somalia.

23.02.2026 23:14 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

Open borders would cause massive migration problems. Systems would get overwhelmed as migrants try to move to more prosperous or stable areas. The existing very successful democratic socialist system in Scandinavia breaks down under an influx of people with different values and expectations.

Lots of culture shock and friction, reluctance to assimilate (Sweden had explicit policy of multiculturalism > assimilation, too) and too many new arrivals and result was areas of high concentrations of immigrants who don't feel accepted or at home, plus native Swedish resentment of new arrivals.

23.02.2026 23:03 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

IOW they did what an ideal immigration program would do. But they got overwhelmed. They had a lot of new residents who came from v different cultures - Sweden has high level of gender equality, is very secular, etc while many immigrants are from very religious cultures with traditional gender roles.
