In my view it's deeply contradictory. They accept the teaching authority of the church for canonicity, but reject the teaching authority to understand the meaning of the text
They wouldn't say that that's what they're doing. They don't think of love as a feeling. After all they're Calvinist. They think of it as a behavior by which they mean living up to the demands of biblical law.
Well more specifically it's deeply orthodox Trinitarianism: God is three and one at the same time. This understanding of the relationship between OT/NT is not new. It's a version of a doctrine called the Unity of Scripture that dates at least as far back as the Reformation
