I've been reporting on varieties of fundamentalism and Christian nationalism for 20+years, around US & world, I've seen violence firsthand, and still this is the creepiest thing I have ever witnessed. Every single element of it. I am afraid it will haunt me for the rest of my days.

Just to be clear I in no way think this is an excuse (it's a willful ignorance) and I'm sure Geoff agrees with that too
The news this weekend has been devastating. I'm appalled my government is bombing & killing people all over the world. Only Congress can stop this so members need to become as afraid of their voters as they are of Donald Trump. We need massive protests everywhere. The world can't wait for midterms
No, you are not. I think it's so familiar that they don't even recognize it
Sarah Posner and I have been writing about the dangers of this movement since the early 2000s. Here's a new piece by her:

There are people who could stop this insanity. They just are not doing it
Under a Christian Nation, as understood in this form Christian nationalism, women & non-christians wouldn't vote or hold public office. There's no separation of church & state in its common meaning, there's no space of neutrality between Christianity and other worldviews, so there's no pluralism
He's ginning up what he first joked about as the #DonroeDoctrine with his #ShieldOfTheAmericas
He's building an empire and he's just getting started. He won't stop unless Congress stops him
The reason we have βstupid rules of engagementβ is to make sure we donβt bomb elementary schools.
They sure are
It's not up to the people there and it may not be public.
Trump didn't attack #Iran because of #NuclearWeapons, or to spread #democracy. He wants to replace the leader with someone he can control like he did in Venezuela. He wants to build a network of vassal states like Putin's. No country is safe

Trump's going to take over #Cuba. He wants Argentina to Greenland.
Watching clips of SOTU and thinking about how the poor Veep and Speaker can't zone out like the rest of us as Trump drones on.
They have to listen to every single word so they know what facial expression to display
1. Trump administration is building prisons to house people they claim they want to deport
2. They have long fear-mongered claiming " the left" wants to put Christians in concentration camps (remember everything with them is projection)
So... Who do you suppose those prison camps are really for?

This is a very good conversation, and a disturbing one. I did not know anti-Semites had taken up "Christ is King" as a trollish rallying cry. Had to sit quietly with that for a bit. I do have a quibble with the discussion of intiation, as it relates to all these rightwing new Catholics. Because...
A lectionary tradition, with its reliance on the teaching authority of the church, is contrary to "sola scriptura!"
In my view it's deeply contradictory. They accept the teaching authority of the church for canonicity, but reject the teaching authority to understand the meaning of the text
They wouldn't say that that's what they're doing. They don't think of love as a feeling. After all they're Calvinist. They think of it as a behavior by which they mean living up to the demands of biblical law.
Well more specifically it's deeply orthodox Trinitarianism: God is three and one at the same time. This understanding of the relationship between OT/NT is not new. It's a version of a doctrine called the Unity of Scripture that dates at least as far back as the Reformation
