Central Europe has recently been hit by bark beetle outbreaks triggered by drought conditions not previously observed at such intensity. Our new study shows how dramatic the impacts on forests can be if these drought-driven dynamics become the new normal.

Factors behind the rise and collapse of bark beetle populations are still not fully understood. This study found interesting differences between colonisation density and reproductive success in the two outbreak phases

Tree-killing beetle found to be attracted to Britain’s most common spruce
Discovery of pest in UK raises fears for Sitka spruce, which accounts for half of country’s commercial plantations
In 2018, a spruce bark beetle outbreak was reported in Kent, prompting concern among UK foresters about its possible spread. Here, we gave a talk with @marlind.bsky.social to nearly 200 Scotish foresters: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gsh...

Interesting contribution to bark beetle dynamics under hotter droughts based on an extensive pheromone trap network from Germany led by our new colleague, Maja Potterf @mariapotterf.bsky.social. Congrats (:

Really important study that could help reconcile active forest management and nature conservation. Especially relevant in Central Europe, where fears about disturbance spreading from set-aside areas are often irrational. Interestingly, we observed a similar pattern here: doi.org/10.1093/fore...
