A collage of ten photos showing women volunteers working on the Lichfield Canal restoration. They wear high‑visibility jackets or vests, and some wear hard hats. The images show them carrying tools, using equipment, clearing vegetation, planting trees and helping at outdoor volunteer events. The backgrounds include construction areas, woodland, and event tents, highlighting women actively involved in hands‑on restoration work.
Today we shine a light on the wonderful women restoring the Lichfield Canal because canal restoration isn’t just a man’s world. Their skills, dedication, and leadership are shaping the future of this historic waterway for everyone.

“The NUJ will always put the safety, equality and dignity of women journalists at the heart of our work - from backing motions to end violence against women to demanding real action to close the gender pay gap.” #IWD2026

A shallow canal runs through a wooded area with bare trees on both banks. The water reflects the sky and branches. A small green bridge crosses the stream in the background, adding a human-made element to the natural scene.
A muddy canal winds through a wooded area. Leafless trees stand on the left beside a structure partly covered with a striped tarp. The ground is a mix of green grass and fallen leaves, and a small brick wharf curves in the background.
A calm canal runs between two banks. The left bank has a fence and glimpses of nearby houses behind leafless trees, while the right bank is higher and covered in dense ivy and vegetation. The water reflects the blue sky and branches.

Ok, so it shouldn't have any water in it yet, but it does give an idea of how it will look when it's finished.
We're not due to work here again just yet, but we'll be back.

Trade Union Unite is seeking a Sectoral Employment Order (SEO) to raise pay for Archaeologists working in development in Ireland to €45k pa, a level broadly equivalent to building workers in skilled trades.
There are now just three – yes, three – copies of ‘Black Country Miners: A Struggle For Justice’ left in our online shop. Get yours at www.blackcountrysociety.com/shop Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
On Monday our parliamentary group raised the union's call for an independent investigation into allegations that Labour Together hired a commercial agency to investigate journalists and their sources.
Thank you @rebeccalongbailey.com & @johnmcdonnellmp.bsky.social for raising these concerns.

"The case of Vincent Kearney shows how the police and security services abused their powers by unlawfully surveilling a journalist and treating him as a ‘suspect’. These actions cannot go unpunished."

A canal construction site with a towpath on the left and a metal railing along the water on the right. A brick retaining wall spells out “LICHFIELD” in darker bricks. An orange excavator sits on a mound of earth in the background, with scaffolding and buildings behind it.
A canal construction site with a towpath running past on the left and stacks of cement blocks, pallets, and a cement mixer on the right. A brick wall borders the canal, and an orange construction vehicle sits on a mound of earth in the background, with houses visible further back.
Wide view of a canal restoration construction site on an overcast day. In the foreground, a muddy towpath runs between metal safety railings and a brick wall, with stacks of old red bricks, pipes and tools scattered along it. To the right, part of a brick structure is covered with a protective tarp and scaffolding. In the background, large mounds of excavated earth fill the site, and an orange excavator sits on top of the soil. Beyond the site fencing are residential houses and leafless trees.
The handrail is up along Tamworth Road Narrows and more of the towpath is now open!
You can stand, take it all in, and view the Narrows in full awe 🙌
Better still — you can now see the route of the future towpath as it heads towards (and then beneath) Cricket Lane.

We’re raising funds to provide proper welfare facilities for our volunteers. A place to warm up with a hot drink, wash after a hard day’s work, and change out of wet gear. It’s not a luxury, it’s something they’ve earned.
Please support the appeal:

A small construction site where a canal is being built. A yellow Thwaites dumper sits on muddy ground beside stacked concrete blocks and metal brackets. Temporary metal fencing lines the edge of the site, with tools and materials scattered nearby. Grass and residential houses are visible in the background.
A muddy channel supported on one side by newly installed vertical metal sheet piles. Blue alignment markings are visible on the piles. Construction materials and equipment sit along the opposite edge, with temporary fencing and suburban houses in the background.
Great progress this week at Gallows Wharf/Reach, even with the site more like a mud bath!
Our contractor, Walsh Construction, has hit an important milestone in reinforcing the towpath wall and has moved on to the sheet piling, which will form the north offside wall.
