The cover for a comic titled β€œThe Luminary Lark-Mirror”. It depicts the lit playfield of a pinball machine, painted elaborately with larks, nets, explosions in the sky, and a naked figure emerging from four mirrors, pointing up at a decapitated lark spewing blood from its neck wound. The comic’s author is Casper Pham.

Vasily Vereshchagin, b. 1842
The Apotheosis of War , 1871
Oil on Canvas.

Apotheosis depicts a pile of human skulls set on the barren earth, the aftermath of a battle or siege. A flock of carrion birds are seen to be occupied with picking over the pile; some birds have already landed, while others are flying in or roosting in nearby trees. The ground below them is a sallow, earthy yellow covered with grass, complementing the dirty ivory color of the partially-bleached skulls. The shadow cast by the mound, coupled with the many black orifices created by empty jaws and eye-sockets, adds a sense of depth to the painting, further exacerbating the scale of the deathly pile.

A range of mountains serves as a dividing line for the painting, separating the vastness of the steppes from the emptiness of the sky, while the city of Samarkand can be seen in the far right of the painting. The city's walls have visibly been breached, a reference to the Siege of Samarkand in the summer of 1868 in which the Russian garrison repulsed a Bukharid attack. On the work's frame, Vereshchagin inscribed that he dedicated the painting "to all great conquerors, past, present and to come".

Inscribed on the painting's frame is: "To all great conquerors, past, present and to come."

The Minister of War of the Austrian Empire ordered that his soldiers be barred from viewing this painting, and banned its reproduction.

We’ve asked Indui to contribute two creatures to our β€œFugitives of the Shattered Menagerie” folio, and we need your help hitting our stretch goal to fund this folio! Make this magic happen before the clock runs out by backing the kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/unw...

Indui’s artwork blends historically informed artistic sensibilities, a detailed eye for ecosystem features in epic landscapes, and the most heartwrenchingly beautiful, vividly animal dragons (and other magical characters) I have seen in a long time!

We have one last stretch goal to hit, and it's a folio of creatures and magical beings! The third artist featured is @monstermonger.bsky.social - Indui’s beautiful dragons have been catching my eye for a while now, and I’m so excited to bring her on to share her magic with Swords Without Master!

A digital illustration in the style of a block print. A humanoid figure wearing a red cloak stands next to a long, segmented creature that resembles a carrot. The creature’s body weaves in-and-out of dark bushes.

A digital illustration in the style of old print. It displays three plants in various states of transformation. All are growing vague animal-like bodies: one birdlike, one serpentine, and the other humanoid.

1. What you consider your magnum opus now wont be in 5 years, go ahead and just make that epic comic if that's what you want to do. The point is learning and making the comic. Not waiting until you're good enough.
2. Cheating is fine but stealing isn't. Credit what isn't yours and ask permission. -
