No, “AI” is not a Stochastic Parrot 🦜 I’ve recently come across a new flavor of AI denialism making the rounds.

"AI" is not a stochastic parrot.🦜
I wrote this piece a couple weeks ago, but it was hard for me to finish up given AI's role in society and war over the past few weeks. I should share it at some point though. Not perfect, but here it is.

My students had a creative project today in which they were creating a journal cover that would reflect themselves. 20% asked whether they could go online to find inspiration. They were aghast when I told them they had to use their own imaginations.

Grammarly declined my request to interview CEO Shishir Mehrotra today. But it told me that in response to criticisms, it will allow experts to opt out of the feature by emailing expertoptout@superhuman.com.

I've decided that instead of wasting my own time to see if Grammarly has stolen my name and writing for use their business, I'd just email them to opt out and make them waste some time cleaning up their own goddamn mess.

Don't knock your artistic skills. This was my attempt at explaining some transhumanist's fantasy that we'd be able to solve extinction by using ML to translate animal speech to human speech. 😆

Being a Luddite Is Cool and All, but Have You Seen the Hilarious Tapestries These New Looms Are Making? Don’t get me wrong, I’m as invested in keeping my job as the next weaver. When the boss brought in that big new power loom, I was pretty skeptical....

"The power loom, as we know, is inevitable, preordained by God, who works His miracles through the hands of rich and wise inventors. It’s foolish to resist it. We can’t possibly imagine a different social order—we just can’t! "

Why are you saying none of the history they teach in K-5 is US history? And why do you say that they're teaching creationism? I can't find any evidence of this in any of their materials. The "Core Knowledge" curriculum that they use includes US history throughout K-5.

"Have you ever thought...maybe *our* thoughts are just word that get matched up cause we've seen them together a lot. Like, maybe we thinking we're thinking but we're...not."
"Yeah, there should be a scientific study of what thinking is. Like, with classes and stuff."

Fascinating read, and I wonder how this relates to standards-based learning in K12. Are we prioritizing knowing/SWBAT over learning? Even if learning is the outcome (rather than product), are we robbing students of full participation in process in our race to get to the learning outcome?

Used to be you were a willing participant in setting your clock forward. Now technology coerces you into the time change, sometimes without your own knowledge.

(Yes this is a silly post)

The success of this "AI" project relies on convincing people that they know less than they do, that they are less capable than they actually are. Then deskilling makes it a a self-fulfilling prophesy.

I looked them up, but it doesn't say anything about them teaching creationism, and I see evidence of evolution in the . Can you point to where you found that? Also, their curriculum pages show them teaching US history in 6th, 9th and 12th grade. Maybe we're looking at different things?

But do you have any evidence of schools teaching these things on any sort of scale? Based on state standards, teachers are not supposed to be teaching creationism in Earth Science or Life Science classes in these states. The federal government doesn't "allow" states to set certain science standards.

I'm not sure what you mean by your statement then, because all of those states have biological evolution as part of their academic standards, and none have creationism.

Every time they say "distraction," they mean, "not my priority," but they know how horrible it sounds to say that about attacking people. It's cover for not caring about other people as much as they know they should.

Interviewing for my current job, they mentioned the importance of "teaching students to use [LLM chatbots] ethically." I said, "If it's even possible to use them ethically." A beat of silence, and the conversation moved on. To all the "pragmatists", critical refusal is a very practical strategy.

Years ago, I sat in a classroom and listened to this "AI researcher" justify the position that girls aren't as good as math as boys are. When I argued back, he blustered and changed the subject. If you'd asked me to guess which one of my professors was in the Epstein Files, it'd have been him.
