The study also exposes major assessment gaps in several Mediterranean regions and highlights the vulnerability of island endemics, often confined to tiny habitats and highly exposed to environmental change.
This research reinforces the urgent need to study and protect island wetlands, among the most vulnerable and least known ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
Findings show a large share of wetland flora is threatened, especially species in temporary wetlands and small inland humid zones—microhabitats with huge ecological value.
In this work, Miquel Capó (@miquelcapo.bsky.social), #BOTLAND member, participated as the person responsible for the Balearic Islands dataset.
An international study reviews the conservation status of 275 wetland plant species across 2,217 islands and islets—the most comprehensive assessment of these fragile ecosystems to date.

On October 2nd, Miquel Capó attended, on behalf of BOTLAND, the PIM Initiative – Small Islands of the Mediterranean Board of Directors meeting, to present our research work and future projects on the Balearic islets. 🌿
🌿 This year we concluded the two-year project “BioLitoral”, led by Joana Cursach with the participation of numerous researchers from BOTLAND.
The goal was to deepen the study of two unique coastal species:
the dune endemic Silene migjornensis
and the micro-area coastal species Diplotaxis ibicensis.
🌿Super excited to attend the PIM🏝 Initiative meeting and present our past and future projects on islets! At @botland-uib.bsky.social, we’ll do our best to help improve understanding of how islet flora evolves and adapts to climate change. Many thanks for the invitation!
🌿 Femeniasia balearica is an endemic species of the Balearic Islands that, until recently, was considered the same in both Mallorca and Menorca. However, it has now been divided into two different subspecies: one for each island.

El otro día hubo una tormenta de granizo y la naturaleza nos regaló este fantástico video de una hembra de cernícalo protegiendo a sus huevos de las piedras de hielo poniendo en riesgo su propia integridad (se aprecia cómo la intensidad del granizo daña su plumaje).

Llevamos 3 años buscando más poblaciones por la isla y no encontramos nada. Cada vez más seguros que es la única población que hay...

I was doing pollinator estimation stuff on a forest (see my profile pic) and I found myself looking at a Dianthus caryophyllus (among others, such as the ornamental Bellis in the back)
The worst thing is that people do this thinking they are benefiting biodiversity and ecosysyems...😅
So, for International Women's Day, I've asked my Botany students to look for female scientists in Plant Science and do a short (3-4 min presentation) about their achievements
First week as prof. of Botany just ended! 👌 I've told to every class "My objective here is that you enjoy plants 🌿 despite you don't like Botany 👨🔬👩🔬!" I hope I can do it! 😋
