A variety of crows based on real species are on a pastel background. The surroundings are filled with sparkly effects that crows love. The birds are smiling gently or playfully and look happy and joyful.

Unfortunately the great tits stopped returning to the nest a couple of weeks ago. I can only hope that theyβre okay and built another nest elsewhereπ€π» Iβve missed seeing the chicks hatch and grow (like last year - below!) and just hope theyβll be back (or others) next year ππͺΉ

The start of a great tit nest in a bird house, made up of just a few twigs.
We put up a bird house with a camera in our garden in 2021 and every year since weβve had great tits come and nest in it, and it looks like theyβre going to nest again this year! Looking forward to watching them raise their chicks and seeing (hopefully) all of them fledge π€π»π£ #birds #spring

The costs and healing rates of minor injuries in neonatal reef sharks
Elasmobranch fishes (i.e., sharks, skates, and rays) exhibit remarkable wound-healing capabilities and consistently maintain a high capacity for tissue regeneration throughout their lives. This high ...

Spotted 2 buzzards soaring and 1 perched in a tree (?), a red kite flying over a farmerβs field, and a kestrel sat in a bush while on a drive to/from Beverley on Wednesday. Then saw a flock of common teal on the Humber (Brantingham Drain area) on Thursday which Iβve never βseenβ (or IDβd) before!π¦

Success β an important win for nature! π
Today, the UK Government made the only sensible choice - listening to the science and upholding the ban on neonicotinoids.
This pesticide doesnβt belong in our countryside. Farmers now need support to adopt nature-friendly alternatives.

Yesterday, lots of people were asking me why I, an ocean conservation scientist, said βI support restricting where we use trawling gear, but I donβt support banning it everywhere.β
The answer is simple: humans need food and jobs.
Trawling hurts sensitive habitats
Donβt trawl there.

An eastern grey squirrel cheekily stealing bird food from some feeders hanging in an apple tree.
Despite the weather we still saw 7 starlings, 3 wood pigeons, 3 house sparrows, 2 blue tits, 2 collared doves, and 1 crow for the #BigGardenBirdwatchπ¦ More than I expected as the garden was mostly empty all day with the wind! This strange-looking bird was the most βexcitingβ thing I saw all dayβ¦

We live close to the Humber and occasionally see marsh harriers flying over the river, and sometimes we get sparrowhawks in our garden! And I often spot buzzards and kestrels and sometimes red kites when in the car. Always feels magical seeing them! π¦
