I can give you my opinion about what happened to it: No Child Left Behind.
When our educational system started teaching down to the lowest common denominator instead of keeping a higher standard & working harder to bring everyone up to it, we lost minds.

As an educated historian, I've found it's more a lack of knowledge than it is a discomfort.
People actually seem quite comfortable & very confident.
They just don't know facts, confuse opinion with knowledge, and refuse to capitulate to experts when they are not one.
That's the problem I've found.

Every History textbook must pass Federal *and* State review.
Each State revises History textbooks to suit THEIR propaganda after the Federal government has adjusted for national propaganda.
That's how History works in the US.
There's already 51+ standards in this country.
