Then I rewatched Captain America: The Winter Soldier, one of my favorite comfort films, and it was a reminder that the MCU might have peaked in 2014. My love for this movie knows no bounds.
While Blitz might not be on the same level as Steve McQueen's other work, there's still much to admire, from Saoirse Ronan's heartfelt performance to the immaculate production design. However, I wish it had either fully committed to the Dickensian bit or not attempted it.
I finally decided to watch Civil War (because of my love for Kirsten Dunst). It's frustratingly close to being a good movie, but the lack of any context on what this war is about holds it back. Even its points about war journalists seem overly simplistic.
I can't believe I had never watched The Covenant before. It's giving Disney Channel meets the CW and is absolute mid-2000s trash in the best way possible. Kind of obsessed with Sebastian Stan's unhinged performance in it.
I've likely got the flu (or just the cold from hell, I guess), but my head is finally clear enough to watch movies...

I saw A Real Pain the other night and can't stop thinking about it. Obviously, as someone with a public history degree, the Holocaust tour aspect of it spoke to me, but I was also so touched by how it addresses grief. Kieran Culkin, I was not familiar with your game.
It's not shocking that I love Gladiator II. Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn give deliciously wicked performances, while Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal more than prove they have movie star quality. The script, while occasionally clunky, is horrifically relevant to modern America.
I was skeptical going into #WickedMovie but it surprised me. Jonathan Bailey stole the show, but both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are brilliant, as are the costumes and sets. I still wish it was all in one film rather than two, but it's a beautiful depiction of the musical.
The publicists who refused should honestly be ashamed. The movie is pretty firmly anti-Trump, but not to a degree that should alienate any actor taking part in Actors on Actors. But shoutout to Seb Stan for continuing to make his views on the man clear.
We're firmly into the "omg there are so many 2024 films I need to catch up on to avoid guilt" time of the year and I am not relishing it.

Jon M. Chu directs the hell out of WICKED, flying high most notably during its catchy musical numbers. The show’s characters still feel too thin despite the added length, but Erivo and Grande sell it like the oldest of pros. Crushworthy Bailey and hammy Goldblum/Yeoh stand out.
