Before ward rounds we convened as a firm over bourbons or croissants to discuss the ward patients and their diagnoses for 1 hour, then do the business round requestioning and reexamining and then communicating the planned management. The nursing sister was always present

I remain fascinated by my β€˜lizard brain’ with its prehistoric fears, intuitions, elations and soulfulness.
I have always preferred cellars to attics

I'm talking about emergent grass-roots dancing of the brain that is far greater than its component parts.
Cheaper than a Big Mac royalties go to Parkinson's research

Old age is a planet to itself where all those minor psychic and physical bumps and scratches are suddenly disinhibited taking on new and suddenly robust lives of their own. Anything that has been ignored or closeted is now lit like a Noir film, shadows looming over the everyday.

A great present for all life scientists but especially those with an interest in the brain.
Cheaper than a box of chocolates and better for you. Any royalties go to Parkinson’s research

Belatedly it dawned on me that many of Kennedy and Trump’s notions of health and illness stem from the orgone boxes, golden dawns, trepanning, psychedelics, macrobiotics of the Swinging Sixties.
I found it all a pile of baloney

Finding new ways to provide hope is an important part of neurological practice but you wont find enlightenment in our journals or our textbooks.

I found seeing patients, avoiding functions and committees, walking & listening to music & reading about important developments a way of reducing angst and creating flux.
I didn’t have electronic health records which allowed me time to think and carry out clinical research

Errors of omission are looked on by society as heinous while errors of commission are brushed under the carpet - wastage is never punished

Sometimes when i test large language models with questions relative to neurological practice they come back with the sort of ill informed peacockian response one used to hear in the days of diva doctors. I call them Sprattisms

get them better

For me medicine has always been a privilege and highly satisfying but i was given the opportunity to spend most of my time on patient care and clinical research, had mentors and a supportive firm system
The resident doctors have been denied this by a disrespectful society.

Neurologists who believe the literature began with the internet are not only missing out but repeating in print what is already known. Perhaps it doesn’t matter but it does to me

"The music seemed timeless. Soon I was floating out on the floor, feeling the syncopated horns and strings, galvanising my thinning muscles. I was still the old modernist, making moves I didn’t know I still had in me."

"Charcot Redux" - @ajlees.bsky.social has written a magisterial article on Charcot, which gives you something of the man and his context.

Essential for anyone needing an introduction

Charcot redux Jean-Martin Charcot was born in Paris on 29 November 1825. To mark the bicentenary of his birth, the International Society for the History of the Neuroscie

To commemorate the bicentenary of Jean-Martin Charcot's life. Without him Neurology would be a different speciality.

How much easier it was as a medical student to shut oneself in the library than to visit the wards, but as time went on, I realised I was gleaning far more by the β€˜doing’ than the passive absorption of facts
