The image shows the palm-lined path leading to the Monumento a los Descubridores (Monument to the Discoverers) in La Rábida, Palos de la Frontera, Spain. In the foreground, a large stone compass rose can be seen embedded in the ground of a square. Behind it, palm trees cast their shadows on the ground. This striking monument is also known as the Columna del IV Centenario (Column of the Fourth Centenary). It was erected in honour of those who participated in the discovery of America. Designed by Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, the monument was inaugurated on 12 October 1892 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in America. The column is approximately 54.90 metres high and is made of limestone, concrete and steel. It is crowned by a globe (Orbis) symbolising the world. The picture shows an impressive gorge landscape, which is the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. This region is located on the border between Spain and Portugal. The Duero flows through the valley, which has cut deep into the granite rock over millions of years, forming steep gorges known as "Arribes". The slopes are covered with Mediterranean vegetation, including juniper, oak and, in the lower areas, often olive and almond trees. In the background, a bridge can be seen spanning the deep gorges, as well as fortifications and retaining walls on the slopes. The area is known as a special protection area for birds, especially griffon vultures, golden eagles and black storks.
