Paul is Sent to Caesarea – Acts 23:23-35 Claudius Lysias sends about half of the soldiers in his command to escort Paul to the Roman governor, Felix (23:23-24). Caesarea is about seventy miles by road, so the trip should take at least 2 days. The trip to Caesarea was fast, covering thirty-five miles to Antipatris (a military station on the Judean/Samarian border) and the rest of the twenty-seven miles by cavalry.

Paul Responds to the Charges before Felix – Acts 24:1-10 Like Tertullus's speech in Acts 24:1-9, Paul’s response to the charges against him is also a masterpiece of legal rhetoric. Paul demonstrates that he is a well-educated and eloquent man, able to hold his own in a hearing before a powerful Roman governor. Paul uses proper rhetoric for addressing Felix (24:10). Paul waits for Felix to recognize him, then Paul says he knows Felix’s leadership and says he will cheerfully make his defense.

The Plot to Kill Paul – Acts 23:6-22 When Paul announces that he is a Pharisee and claims to be on trial because of the resurrection (Acts 23:6), a near riot breaks out in the Sanhedrin. After Paul explains God told him to go to the Gentiles in a vision in the Temple, some zealous Jews plot to kill Paul (Acts 22:12-22). By claiming to be a Pharisee, Paul gains the favor of the Pharisees while enraging the Sadducees.

Luke's account of Paul before the Sanhedrin begins to shift the story away from Paul in Jerusalem to Paul in Roman custody. Luke's report in Acts 23 is sometimes thought to be inaccurate. When soldiers learned that Paul was a citizen, they would immediately remove his chains.

Reaction to Paul’s Prophetic Vision – Acts 22:22-29 When Paul says God sent him to the Gentiles, the already angry crowd begins to demand that he be killed. Why does Paul's prophetic vision receive such a violent reaction? Because they shout and throw dust cloaks into the air, it appears that they take Paul’s speech as blasphemy. Rather than accomplishing his goal (reconciliation with the Jewish crowd), he has angered them even more.

Was Paul from a Wealthy Family? Although Longenecker says there is no evidence to indicate Paul grow up with “a silver spoon in his mouth” (Thinking through Paul, 26), John Polhill speculates Paul may have been wealthy for several reasons (Paul and His Letters, 9). First, Paul was born a citizen, so his father or grandfather obtained citizenship. In order to “buy” a citizenship, one might need to spend 18 months wages or more on necessary gifts in order to receive the honor.

God Sent Paul to the Gentiles – Acts 22:17-21 This account of Paul’s vision in the Temple is new information that was not found in the earlier part of Acts. In Acts 9, Ananias tells Paul that God is sending him to the Gentiles. But in Acts 22, Paul does not say Ananias told him about his commission, but God himself tells Paul this while Paul was worshiping in the temple.

First Look: Logos 46 and Study Assistant Study Assistant is the main upgrade in Logos 46 for Logos subscribers. According to Logos, Study Assistant is an environment for “Bible study by letting you ask questions in everyday language and get clear, concise answers drawn directly from resources.” Ask a question, and the Study Assistant responds, “Working on it.” I assume larger libraries take longer than smaller ones, but the wait was not a problem at my very large library.

Meeting Ananias in Damascus – Acts 22:12-16 versus Acts 9 There are several differences between Luke’s narration of Saul’s encounter with the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus in Acts 9 and Paul’s version in Acts 22. For example, he omits Paul's bold preaching in Damascus and his flight from Damascus after preaching Jesus as the Messiah in the synagogues there. In Acts 22:17-21, Paul says he received his call to go to the Gentiles in a vision while worshiping in the Temple, something Luke did not mention previously in Acts.
