If you think the reason to not provide free unlinked bus trips in most US cities is that it costs too much, you might take a moment to understand: how much does it cost to collect, how much fare leakage already happens on bus, how much is the true lost revenue from unlinked trips.

When Massachusetts passed a "millionaires tax" in 2023, conservatives claimed the rich would flee.
But two years later, they haven't — and MA has collected $5.7B for infrastructure and public education.
A reminder that positive change can still happen at the state level.

But do you actually believe it? That fixing the T, solving the housing crisis, making childcare affordable is around the corner?
Or is believing that we can have a government that delivers genuinely radical.

Governing is fundamentally different than campaigning. This should surprise no one. Governing requires thoughtful consideration of the many factors that go into making reform & change happen. Governing requires a talented & loyal team. Public criticism of one’s agency heads is counterproductive.

I can say w/confidence that the only outrage ought to be if BHA bus rapid transit doesn’t happen. I can see how others would take the disconnected events you mention and weave them into a narrative - but these naysayers have no plan of their own other than disinvestment & grievance.
Finished reading Erick Guerra’s new book “Overbuilt: The high costs & low rewards of US Highway Construction.” A superb summary of how we got the transportation system we have today & a data-supported call for a new approach. Reforming the next surface transportation act is an essential first step.
