As I watch footage of explosions in Beirut and dust clouds towering above apartment blocks in Tehran, I keep coming back to something that I witnessed back in the summer of '04, during my first tour in Iraq. But first, let's start with a question:

It likely would have just made me feel profoundly guilty that I was yet again not meeting “norms” and would have made grief harder for me to untangle.
I never subscribed to this because I think people are often non-linear in their emotional thinking & I just don’t know enough about it to hold an opinion, but this past year my grief was chaotic and completely without much of a pattern to speak of so I’m glad I never held onto that as an expectation

🫂 I’ve been ugly crying all evening. This one was much more skittish and clever than the previous ones and deeper into the woods. I think I know where the mama cat hangs out though so I’m still going to try and get her and get her spayed and relocated. We have coyotes and a mountain lion around.
I didn’t get the feral kitten trapped before the hawk got to him and I am so devastated. A nod to the UPS driver who stopped and backed up and gave me comfort. He didn’t have to do that, but he took the time to be gentle and kind to a stranger. This one is going to stick with me for some time 💔
