I gave a Call of Cthulhu player a fear of opening doors. Not by using game mechanics to give his character a phobia, he just avoided all possibility of opening any door in-game. It wasn't role-playing either - he genuinely felt the fear. Everything bad starts when you open a door.

I think what has been said already is totally correct, and also see if you can find someone to unreservedly cry with. It's not always who you expect it to be.
