Heating oil prices are rising following conflict in the Middle East. π’π
Many homes across Ely&EastCambs rely on heating oil because theyβre off the gas grid β yet unlike gas customers, they have no price cap. Iβve written to the Minister asking what support will be provided for rural households. π
π¬ Held constituent surgeries online and in Ely.
β
Closed 13,349 cases so far (and 2,925 this year) where constituents have contacted me seeking advice, information, or support. Get in touch if I there's something you think I can help you with!

π©ββοΈ Met with the Integrated Care Board (NHS) to review plans for improving GP provision in Ely and East Cambridgeshire.
π’οΈ Raised concerns with the minister about the lack of protections for households reliant on heating oil, highlighting how rapidly changing prices affect many constituents.

WORKING FOR ELY & EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE β WEEKLY UPDATE π
Here are a few highlights from my work in Parliament and across Ely and East Cambridgeshire over the past week:
[3/3] We urgently need safeguards to prevent the UKβs further involvement in this conflict and ensure the safety of all British citizens abroad.
[2/3] The Iranian regime must abandon its nuclear ambitions, but we must pursue this end through diplomacy and economic levers, not unilateral military action.
I am gravely concerned about the Prime Ministerβs decision to permit US use of UK military bases for βdefensiveβ strikes against Iran.
[1/3] I am increasingly troubled by the escalating conflict in Iran, which is costing countless lives and endangering more by the day.
President Trumpβs decision to launch this war was entirely illegal, and will bring only bloodshed for the Iranian people, not freedom.
Rural healthcare has been neglected for too long.
In Parliament today I called on the Minister to bring forward a strategy to end the neglect of rural healthcare.
Best of luck to the brilliant students at Soham Village College competing in the regional heats of the Senior National Reading Champions Quiz β this avid reader will be cheering you on! πβ¨

Congratulations to Ely's Stained Glass Museum on being awarded Designated Status by Arts Council England. A huge achievement, recognising the collection as being of national significance β and a real point of pride for Ely. Weβre incredibly lucky to have a museum of this standing on our doorstep. π
π Thanks to everyone who came to my Community Meeting in Littleport this week β always great to discuss local issues with you.
π If you couldnβt attend, you can still raise an issue via an advice surgery (in person or online), or by email or phone:

Charlotte stood with a group of men in Ely Market Square, all with walking boots and hats on. They are holding a Fenland flag, and a blue banner which advertises 'Men Walking & Talking Est 2021'.
Really enjoyed joining James & the Men Walking and Talking Ely group this week. A simple idea β walking side by side and talking openly β but a powerful one.
Huge credit to James for bringing this to Ely. If a walk and a chat might help, Iβd really encourage you to give it a go. πΆββοΈπ¬
Pleased the High Court ruled the proscription of Palestine Action a "grave misuse of terrorism laws". Making a legal equivalence with groups such as ISIS undermined civil liberties and public trust. The Government must now abide by the ruling and do right by the peaceful protestors arrested under it
πΌBut the Government must do more to back apprenticeships and invest in future skills. I am particularly concerned with restrictions on access to Level 7 apprenticeships, which denies the opportunity of participating in these schemes to so many young people looking to get a start in life. (2/2)
It's National Apprenticeship Week!
π Earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting apprentices and providers at an Apprenticeship Fair here in Parliament, where it was great to find out about the incredible range of opportunities available to make a start in exciting new careers. (1/2)
This is about fairness.
People who came to the UK legally, contributed to our NHS, science, social care and communities, should not face retrospective rule changes.
I challenged the Government to end the fear and uncertainty and rule this out.
Charlotte in an orange jacket holding a board that says she is committed to ending corridor care in Addenbrookes. She is stook next to a representative of Age UK, in front of a backdrop covered in the charity's logo.
Thank you to AgeUK for hosting a vital reception on the crisis in A&E.
30,000 people wait over 12 hours every week.
Patients left on trolleys in corridors β no privacy, no dignity. This is a national scandal.
The Lib Dems are calling for urgent change & have set out a plan to end corridor care.
Charlotte and two scientists all wearing white body suits and orange hats, looking at a complex metal structure. All are smiling.
I recently visited SuperSharp in Waterbeach ππ°οΈ They are developing an innovative new approach to Earth observation and imaging from space. It was fascinating to see their work on next-gen satellite technology β & exciting to think they could soon be flying the flag for Ely & East Cambs in space ππ°οΈ
During a recent debate in Parliament on the Key Stage 1 curriculum, I shared the experience of Becky, a teacher and parent from Ely, and the impact of play-based learning.
I also raised concerns about SEND, and the pressure on schools to be more inclusive without the resources they need.
π»After months of uncertainty, I welcome the Governmentβs business rates relief for pubs and music venues.
But once again, they have adopted a piecemeal approach.
The Government must commit to extending its relief to cafes, restaurants and attractions which make up such invaluable community hubs.
This Holocaust Memorial Day we remember millions of people systematically murdered under Nazi persecution.
81 years since the liberation of the concentration and death camps, it is vital that we continue to reflect on that dark corner of history, honour its survivors, and learn from its lessons.
[3/3] It is now vitally important that we use this time to negotiate a long-term funding solution and to strengthen end-of-life care in our area.
[2/3] We pressed the Minister and the ICB for a more evidence-based approach to end-of-life care in our local area which values the incredible standard of care offered by Arthur Rank Hospice.
Thankfully, public donations have afforded us a 12-month funding reprieve.
[1/3] This week, I joined my Cambridgeshire Lib Dem colleagues Ian Sollom MP and Pippa Heylings MP in a meeting with Minister for Care and CEO of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care Board, to discuss the future of funding for the Arthur Rank Hospice.

New research from @HistoricEngland & the Uni of Glasgow reveals that local historic places are vital for mental health. Our rich local heritage is one of the many reasons I'm proud to represent Ely & East Cambs. bit.ly/HistoricPlac...

πΏ This week, I hosted an event Parliament showcasing the Natural Polymers Group and their innovative technologies for a plasticβfree future.
Great to see Xampla from my constituency, with their natural polymer alternative to plastics for uses such as food packaging and takeaway boxes!
