🌿 Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!

My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.

We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

Cover of β€˜Mr. Darwin’s Shooter’ showing a man with a rifle on the edge of a beach

Been stuck by bad weather in Atlanta - the only good thing is that I had the time to finish β€˜Mr. Darwin’s Shooter’ by Australia author Roger McDonald. It’s a fictional historical narrative on a real person, Syms Covington, who made natural history collections with Darwin while on HMS Beagle.

Giving a talk at beautiful @centrecollege.bsky.social in Kentucky about #evolution - love meeting with students and faculty at this liberal arts and science college where you can really see how a smaller school can integrate a diverse range of expertise into a curriculum for all students

I love caves, inflatables and science communication. This month is #colorectal cancer awareness month - the disease that has been ruining me the last 20 months. Get a colonoscopy folks. It’s not as fun as what I’m doing here but it ain’t that bad either.

Cover of book β€˜Ask for it’

Ask For It: How Women Can Use the Power of Negotiation to Get What They Really Want by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever is a guide that teaches women negotiation skills for professional and personal situations, offering a four-phase program to help them identify their worth, strategize, and overcome common barriers like the fear of asking. The book uses real-life stories to illustrate how to ask for raises, promotions, and more, emphasizing that negotiation is essential and can be done in a way that feels comfortable for women.

My academic coach (a very cool privilege I have) just told me about β€˜Ask For It’ a guide for women to negotiate a raise. It came up after I mentioned equity in pay πŸ’° in academia.

The world sucks right now - but enjoyed camping this weekend in Mississippi with my family. I think because a rock is hard to find in Louisiana (hey it’s mostly floodplain) my kids enjoying find them - especially when they have fossils in them. Wish I knew more about what they found. Anyone know?

I'm constantly trying (/failing) to get this point across.

If you're a trained expert in a field, then it may be worthwhile to question the scientific consensus of your peers.

If you're not, the scientific consensus is absolutely the best you can do and it's arbitrary foolishness to disregard it.

Just finished Peter Matthiessen’s classic β€˜The Snow Leopard’ - a mix of science and spiritualism. It’s about finding yourself in the shadow of the Himalayas. I’m going to Nepal this summer and looking forward to daydreaming in close proximity to this narrative.

A colorful infographic titled "What is the Trans Bill of Rights?" outlines four points with icons: protections from employment and housing discrimination, equal access to medical treatment without discrimination, legal recognition of gender identity, and the right to use restrooms aligning with a person's gender identity.
