Great to speak to @bristol247.bsky.social about womenβs safety in parks and green spaces for this article. www.bristol247.com/news-and-fea...
Vital story by my colleague Helena Horton β about the number of people who don't live within a 15-min walk of green space. Freely accessible, wildlife-rich green space should be a modern-day human right! And good govts should see it as a public health essential. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Govt also needs to consider that living near a park doesn't necessarily mean you are able to use it. There are lots of barriers to green space use beyond distance.

But there is more to ensuring access than just having spaces nearby
"True accessibility goes far beyond distance. It is about safety, welcome, design, culture and whether people feel they belong"

Hi folks. I am going freelance again.
I donβt share my work on here, apart from books (which are not my proper job) so hereβs more info about what I do:

True that "merchants in Bristol were responsible for more than 500,000 enslaved African people being shipped to the Caribbean and North America"
Not true to say they passed through the city's port. The triangular trade was goods to Africa, enslaved across the Atlantic, sugar etc back to Bristol.
Low traffic neighbourhoods: They make roads safer, they cut pollution, but those pencil-necked desk jockeys at the council didnβt think about nuns getting their chippy tea.
This stone on the boundary between the estates of Blaise Castle and Kings Weston dates back to the 1830s.
It is engraved with βJSHβ on the Blaise Castle side - the estate of John Scandrett Harford. The Kings Weston side reads βPJMβ for the estateβs owner Philip John Miles.

"local leaders know their streets best and will intend on being given the power to take action" ????
Not sure why LAs need guidance if they "know their streets best" why does DfT need to be involved?
This is the report I spoke of on #bbcaq just now - ministers tried to suppress it, were finally forced to release it after an FoI, but shamefully only published a redacted version. The first duty of Govt is to protect its citizens - that starts with being honest with us about scale of threat we face

The Canal and River Trust is entrusted to look after our precious waterways .
The restoration of our canal network has been a real success story creating new habitats for wildlife, access to nature to millions of people and building new communities on and around our waterways.
Meet Marco, who tells us how, one public toilet at a time he and the Edinburgh Thriving Green Spaces team are breaking down barriers to spending time outdoors.
His story shows how small changes can make green spaces welcoming for all.
