On my personal list of irritations, being asleep and dreaming that you’re having trouble sleeping is up near the top.

Gary Numan Athens set list.
Gary Numan on stage.
I honestly knew very little Gary Numan, but felt like this might be my only/last chance to see him. From the moment he walked out flanked by guitarist & bassist dressed like zombie wasteland priests, we got an amazingly heavy, slinky, apocalyptic show. Deep dive into his catalog starts tomorrow.
Reese McHenry - Forever LP
I jumped on pre-ordering this posthumous release, as her No Dados record is one of my absolute favorite records of the last 5-6 years. Hard-charging indie rock w/belted-out vocals doesn’t get much better. On first listen, Forever holds up equally well and underscores what a massive talent we lost.
Band with Peter Buck
Vanessa Briscoe Hay
Magnapop’s Linda Hopper
Michael Shannon and his sister on “Nightswimming”
Really fun night at the 40 Watt for Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy’s tribute to R.E.M.’s Life’s Rich Pageant album. No crazy R.E.M. fireworks like last year but we did get Peter Buck and Bill Berry, as well as Magnapop’s Linda Hopper and Pylon’s Vanessa Briscoe Hay. Well worth the trip!
Just getting started on episode 2 and delighted to hear y’all discussing Becky Warren. Can’t remember the last time I made a mix that didn’t include one of her songs - which may say something about the vibe of my mixes. Not familiar with Amelia Day, though. Will check her out.
Cd haul: Elf Power, Freedy Johnston, Margaret Glaspy, Innocence Mission, Faces, CW Stoneking, Dave Edmunds, Long Ryders
It was great to do a little road trip and get out of my own head for a while. Went down to Athens, GA for some CD shopping at Low Yo Yo Stuff Records and then a great cheeseburger next door at Clocked! Diner. A great time bookended by driving back country roads with the radio blaring. The haul:
Sigh, yet another day of waking up and not suddenly having the power to wish certain people into the cornfield…
I quite enjoyed that first episode. I used to listen to the Adobe & Teardrops podcast, but had lost track of Rachel Cholst after it ended. Good to be reminded she’s out there doing the good work.
Always tickled when i borrow my teenage son’s car and he has it turned to the local Hispanic station. Not b/c I think it’s funny but because I’m glad he’s finding things he likes that are outside of his parents’ influence, or from his friend group. Things that are just for him because he likes it.
Subscribed. Looking forward to checking it out.
Despite being a long-time Todd Snider fan, I’d never gotten the chance to dig into his Hard Working Americans output. Heard “The High Price of Inspiration” for the first time tonight. Man, talk about a song that hits your soul like a brick…
@wncw.bsky.social Great set from Roland tonight! He was bringing it in the lead-up to Cosmic American Music Show. And of course, enjoying CAMS as always.
Randy Newman, Jonathan Richman, Rockpile records.
Went late to RSD shopping and got two of the three things I wanted. I’m not surprised I got shut out of the Son Volt record. Beyond tickled that I found a pristine used copy of Rockpile’s “Seconds of Pleasure” album for only three bucks!
2 of my son’s friends decided to celebrate Franksgiving, which involves rolling up into their friends’ driveways with a cooler full of grilled hot dogs & drinks, & then standing around the bed of the truck gabbing like a bunch of old codgers while they ate. Awesome.
Pogues 40th anniversary CD
Pretty nice little mail day. I’ve learned the hard way to grab interesting deluxe editions when I can, because they tend to go out of print pretty quickly these days.
For the Miinus 5 portion, it was Mike stage right on keyboards and Peter stage left but on bass. Equally strange!
40 Watt sign advertising The Baseball Project and The Minus 5.
The Baseball Project on stage.
Great show last night from The Minus 5 & The Baseball Project. Both bands consist of Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), Linda Pitmon (drummer for everyone), and R.E.M.s Peter Buck & Mike Mills. Sold out, so the packed 40 Watt was a sweat box. An absolutely fun show!
Weird how you can hear a band’s music for years and enjoy it but not completely click with it, and then you listen to it, and you wonder if you’d ever really been listening to it at all. Today, it’s Supergrass. Suddenly, that stuff is hitting right.
The fates conspired to put @harvestrecordsavl.bsky.social, Pharmacy Records, and Horizon Récords in my path home today. Who am I to risk the wrath of the fates by not stopping by?
That was a good time, and we loved that theatre. Thank y’all for hosting!
Local classic rock station is doing a day of nothing but Ozzy songs. Every time they play an obscure gem, it’s a reminder of how piss-poor and predictable their normal computerized programming is.
It’s easy to lose sight of the value of small pockets of community these days. Thanks for this reminder.
@channel6.bsky.social Loved this week’s kickoff/return of Batman Friday.
That’s for sure what I used it for as soon as I found out about it.
Me, watching the kids unknowingly start to eat the vegan boxed Mac and Cheese I accidentally bought:
ME: *sits at desk and works* Just focus. Just focus. Don't look around. Do NOT look around.
THE NEWS:
Taking my son to guitar practice, which I really enjoy because I can hear his weekly improvement and talent for it. And if I’m lucky, he asks if we can get pizza afterwards.
An Awesome Burger and some Guinness at Black Bear Tavern in Atlanta followed by a couple of hours of football disaster stories from @shutdownfullcast.bsky.social and @splitzoneduo.com crews. Quality evening!
I know Tomorrow Me pretty well, and I think he’ll be really happy with Today Me for filling up the car with gas tonight instead of “I’ll get it in the morning.”
Finally watched The Dead Don’t Die; as much as I thoroughly enjoyed watching Adam Driver & Bill Murray deadpan their way through a zombie apocalypse, & Tilda Swinton doing her thing, I get why some folks were disappointed. There’s a very real sense of the great movie that could have been.
