Prince - Pop Life
lately i’ve been getting tiktoks that talk about concepts from the tao te ching in sort of self-help-ish language (they’re not especially good tiktoks) but the comments are full of people getting really mad that the advice is too callous and individualistic. this does bring me some joy
Chainsaw Man is Never Gonna Score
i am not immune to yapping
likewise "you didn't really watch the movie if you were on your phone the whole time." implicit sacredness of the binary yes/no "have you Really watched the thing"
it's intellectual pocket-watching
100%. i think there's also a latent fear that someone else will read two pages of moby-dick, think it sucks, and give it one star on goodreads, and maybe even consider it "a book they have read"
Showing a young person my arcade cabinet and they said 'ohh, I like the bathroom buttons.' Sigh
Lego Reimu
She's got an interesting silhouette that always makes her a fun character to interpret using Lego pieces.

This is true
like we're not talking about showing up to a play halfway through then asking the actors to do the first act over. the author writes the thing and makes a bunch of copies and a bunch of those copies will end up holding up coffee mugs or forgotten on external hard drives or in the literal trash
also like... presumably you won't be there to Be annoyed when some random reader reads a page from the middle and decides not to engage further. as with most forms of art the relationship is asynchronous and basically anonymous
this isn't exactly what barthes was talking about but it's related!
i would love to forget about this again and intend to do so as soon as possible
it's bad enough the way people sanctify the physical form of mass-produced books that are still in print. now it's a moral failing to open to a random page to get a vibe
"The book is there to serve me" is such a bizarre statement, as if she's only read cookbooks and technical manuals. We need a name for this, something like vice-signalling, where people, usually in or around tech or finance, claim to do some quirky bullshit that patently doesn't work just so they can post about it to build their personal brand. Jay Graber 6 yr. ago • @arcalinea Maybe my brain is internet poisoned, but l often don't try to read books linearly. Like, look, the book is there to serve me, not vice versa. I'm going to read it how I want. I've appalled people by sometimes starting in the middle of fiction books. If the end was good I'll go back and read the beginning. There are so many books out there, I had to see if it was worth my time!
i resent terribly being forced to hand it to this backwater site's dumb asshole mod but it's still insane to me that people get this hung up on this old take that isnt even that crazy
who is the book there to serve if not me
so obviously bad faith. Why *would* you engage with it sincerely
i have so many other games i want to get to but im just gonna be replaying kittens game endgame for the next like month
ate a really good sandwich
