Let me add, generations of my family are intimately familiar with the hypocrisy and failure of the country to live up to its promises. Yet growing up, I still believed in the promise. It’s a gut punch to watch all these exceptions/failures happen in real-time.
It feels like the majority of knowledge I gained from social studies classes in middle school about civics and American government is useless now. I was promised three branches of government and checks and balances.
Scene: In bed, Sunday morning.
Camille has been lying on her side, scrolling on Instagram. A film bloopers account catches her fancy. She hasn’t moved in 45 minutes. She is not strong enough to fight the algorithms. The dark patterns consume some of our most skilled players.
With that said, every day I hope I’ll get a notification that Tracy Chapman is going on tour, and every day I tell myself, “Camille you can’t force her to sing for you. Just enjoy the beauty she’s already shared with you.” So I keep listening to her songs and every few years re-read the GoT series.
I’m starting to think more people should understand/experience not everything works out the way you want it, and yet life still goes on. We can’t force labor on someone. I’d love to read new ones but the others already gave me much joy.
FYI for the train nerds (which includes my son who’s obsessed w/ trains & Big Boy is his favorite). The largest steam engine in the world will go on tour in 2026. A pretty big deal in the train world. I’ll definitely make sure I see it in person. #trains #locomotive

Hi Micki!! Happy Kwanzaa to you! I’ll probably start tomorrow, I got distracted with some side quest Lego sets for the kids. I was never really into Legos but now I get it. An easy (yet expensive hobby). How are the holidays going for you?

For the last 13 years we’ve had a robot on the PLANET Mars (it was a 352 MILLION mile journey). We get damn near daily photos from the SURFACE of Mars… and yet…
Yeah, I use Feedly but the folks I like don’t have blogs anymore… it’s like I have to follow them on social media to stay current.
Sure, Substack sort of does this, but I’d like to follow other RSS-style content outside that platform. Deep sigh… I’m just frustrated with social media and nostalgic for the blogging days — no bots, just human trolls.
Okay, maybe not Google Reader exactly, but my point is I want more control over what I consume — no algorithm deciding what’s “important” and minimal AI (maybe just for summaries, nothing more).
Hear me out: go register a domain, build a blog, make RSS available — and let’s bring Google Reader back. Yeah, I want the internet to feel like it’s 2009 again.

Definitely enjoying this season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds but what’s up with these wigs… it’s almost like they are bad on purpose.
Saw the new Superman movie and really enjoyed it. There’s something timeless about Superman…the hope, the clarity, the belief in doing the right thing, even when it’s hard. This one felt closer to the original ‘79 film to me than other iterations.
