A Red-winged Blackbird singing his heart out along Central Park's Harlem Meer this morning. If you look closely (and use a little imagination) you can see his breath in the cool air! πΆπΆπΆ #Blackbirds #CentralPark #birdcpp

"Hey, ladies, check it out!" The Green-winged Teals were putting on the moves this morning on Central Park's Pool. Spring is suddenly in the air! π·π·π· #Ducks #CentralPark #birding
Terrific photo!
Congratulations!

There are just 577 Whooping Cranes in existence. The good news is that is far higher than the 15 in 1941. While they're still endangered, there's a chance of long-term survival. Spotted this one striding across someone's backyard in Lamar, Texas. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ #Cranes #BirdsSeenIn2026

The Heron rookery in Rockport, Texas literally has hundreds of Great Blue Herons nesting together. Not everyone appreciates the close proximity of neighbors! πππ #Herons #Rookery #Texas

As a Heron you spend most of the year on your own. Suddenly being right on top of each other can be very very stressful!

lol!
One thing I've noticed on several trips to Texas is how different Northern Cardinals look. They seem longer, leaner and often redder than their northern counterparts. Sexual selection at work, I would guess. π₯°π₯°π₯° #Cardinals #Texas #birding
πππ Woohoo, spring is definitely on the way! I spotted my first Red-winged Blackbird scouting territory at Central Park's Harlem Meer this morning. β€οΈπ§‘π€ #Blackbird #CentralPark #birding
I took a minute to watch this Wood Duck in Central Park's Pool. He was bossing the male Mallards around, and then a female Mallard came over and gave him hell. He backed down immediately! πππ #Ducks #CentralPark #birding
It is a hummingbird. Not the largest, either! There's a Giant Hummingbird in Peru, which we saw. It's fairly dull looking though.
With the wind chill about 11Β° in Central Park this morning, my thoughts returned to Christmas in Peru. Here's a Sparkling Violetear we watched near Ollantaytambo. Sparkling Violetear is such a wonderful name, don't you think? πππ #Hummingbirds #Ollantaytambo #Peru
Wood Ducks usually pair up by January, but I spotted a solo male on ice by Central Park's Pool. This guy's available and looking for love, ladies! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ #WoodDuck #CentralPark #birding
Here's the full shot. This gives you a good sense of how small Teals are compared to Mallards!
I spotted a beautiful Green-winged Teal on the snow at the Central Park Pool this morning. Any guess what the background is? (Answer below.) βββ #Teal #CentralPark #birding

A Great Blue Heron flanked by a trio of Roseate Spoonbills at a pond in Lamar, TX. This part of Texas is suffering severe drought, so species gather together in the few places with freshwater. An alligator lurked nearby! π₯°π₯°π₯° #Herons #Spoonbills #BirdsSeenin2026
This Northern Cardinal came so close to me in Central Park you can see his 'eyelashes'! These are specialized feathers that protect his eyes when he's foraging. πππ #Cardinals #CentralPark #birding
