I honestly think it may be down to the simple fact that Democrats actually care about whether they're viewed as responsible for the fringe left, whereas the GOP does not care if they're viewed as responsible for the fringe right.

Maybe the Avatar movie? For such a successful and high grossing film, it didn't seem to actually influence much of anything that came after it.
