#BirdoftheDay Chilly day in the panhandle a couple weeks ago. Now who doesn't love a good Pelican?
A male Eastern Towhee (white-eyed) has a black throat, head and back, a rusty red side, and white belly. He is viewed from the side and has an open beak singing with his head lifted. He is perched on an unripe green cluster of berries atop a stem of Beautyberry, with its green/yellow leaves obscuring his tail and below him. The background is clear olive green which darkens away from the bird. Most Eastern Towhees have a dark reddish eye, but this bird's eye is striking pale yellow, a characteristic found only in birds in Florida and some part of the south U.S.
A light-eyed, male Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus alleni) is my #BirdoftheDay for the #Songbirds theme and is also #PerfectlyPerched (alternate theme) on Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.

A single penguin stands upright on a dark, uneven rock near the edge of icy water. The bird faces slightly to the right with its short wings stretched out to its sides, almost like it is balancing or posing. The penguin has the classic black-and-white “tuxedo” coloring: a black head and back with a bright white chest and belly. A thin white ring circles its eye, making the eye stand out against the dark feathers. Its small beak is short and dark, and its pale pink feet grip the rock beneath it. Behind the penguin is a cold Antarctic landscape. The water appears gray and calm, and farther back there are large blue-white ice formations and glaciers, slightly blurred by the camera’s focus. Snow and ice cover the distant shoreline, giving the entire scene a quiet, frozen atmosphere. borrowed Audubon photo, close to what I saw today, no camera in hand, just pruning tools: two male ruby-crowned kinglets whirling around each other singing-chattering, spinning through the small oaks I let grow behind the pear trees, both showing their bright red crests backlit by morning sunlight🧵
